Top spots to enjoy Head of the Charles and grab tasty fare

- By J.Q. LOUISE

The Head of the Charles is the cornerstone of the quintessential New England fall weekend. It doesn’t get better than taking in a regatta on the Charles with beautiful foliage in the background. Whether you’re a parent coming into town to see your children race or a Bostonian looking for a fun weekend activity, here are a few spots to check out during this weekend’s races.

Select Oyster Bar

selectboston.com 50 Gloucester St., Back Bay Since it opened, Select has been a Head of the Charles hot spot because of its proximity to the Massachusetts Avenue bridge. Pop in for a lunch of raw bar goodies, and treat yourself to a nice glass of wine or a fall cocktail.

Asta,BackBay

Located right on Massachusetts Avenue, Asta is a hidden gem that is perfect for taking the whole family out for a celebratory meal after the big race. Serving up only a set tasting menu each night, with either a five-course or eight-course option, Asta is a foodie’s dream. But be sure to snag a reservation on this extremely busy weekend.

Alden & Harlow

aldenharlow.com 40 Brattle St., Cambridge If you want to stick to the Cambridge side of the races, head to Alden & Harlow for brunch or dinner today or tomorrow. Try to score its famous “Secret Burger.” This is another spot that fills up quickly, so make a reservation. But if you don’t get in on time, try to grab a seat at the bar.

Deuxave

371 Commonwealth Ave., Back Bay

Another spot worthy of a celebratory meal, Deuxave doesn’t disappoint. Located at the corner of Massachusetts and Commonwealth avenues, the restaurant is convenient to all the Head of the Charles action and offers a seasonal menu filled with French- and New England-inspired cuisine.

Beat Brew Hall

beatbrewhall.com 13 Brattle St., Cambridge Formerly known as Beat Brasserie, Beat Brew Hall was reconceptualized as a beer hall in the same Harvard Square location this year. This is another Cambridge-side option for a drink or meal during the Head of the Charles festivities. Fall weather always goes well with some hearty pub fare. Things like warm pretzels, fish and chips, and Oktoberfest sausage are all on the menu.

Good luck to all those competing in the 54th Head of the Charles Regatta!
