Medford gambrel has stories

- By MIRIAM SCHWARTZ

The three-story gambrelshaped house at 2 Woburn St. in Medford certainly looks historic, but casual passersby might not know it’s very much a part of Massachusetts and even American lore.

In addition to being a stunning family home, 2 Woburn St. is one of the few 18th-century homes to survive in Medford. Formerly belonging to Medford’s storied and prominent Brooks family, the home was built in the 1780s, possibly incorporating parts of an even older home, and passed down in the Brooks family. According to Brooks family tradition, Paul Revere stopped at the home’s original site the night before the Battle of Lexington and Concord, looking for Sam Adams, who was a Brooks family friend.

With that as a preamble, while the home occupies a unique place in history, it’s also an absolute jewel with three levels of living space over more than 3,400 square feet and many modern updates while preserving its original floors, staircases and doors.

Getting to work may have been less of a concern in the 1780s, but the home’s location is ideal for commuters — three bus lines pick up right in front of the house, and the commuter rail is a short walk away.

Inside, the stately home has close to 3,500 square feet of living space, including a living room, family room and formal dining room on the first floor, each with its own fireplace, gleaming wood floors and tons of architectural detail. From moulding, to chair rails and French doors, the home is understated and elegant. There’s a fully renovated kitchen, featuring granite counters and custom cabinets, that peeks into a cozy sunroom.

Three bedrooms on the second floor, including the master bath and the home’s spacious full bath with clawfoot tub, are roomy and bright. There are two more bedrooms on the third floor that can be used as home office space, workout area, a playroom, or even a library thanks to clever shelving.

Gardeners take note, a private, fenced backyard and three garden areas await you, as well as a stone patio and tons of room to entertain or chase a furry friend.
