Tagovailoa powers ’Bama past Tennessee

Tua Tagovailoa threw touch- down passes to four receivers and No.1 Alabama started fast again in a 58-21 victory over Tennessee yesterday in Knoxville, Tenn.

Alabama had touchdowns on its first four possession­s while outscoring Tennessee 28-0 and outgaining the Volunteers 217-6 in the opening period. Alabama has outscored opponents 165-31, and Tennessee has been outscored 69-16 in first quarters this season.

Tagovailoa went 19-of-29 for 306 yards before leaving midway through the third quarter with Alabama ahead 51-14. He took a big hit on his final play of the day, a 51-yard touchdown pass to Henry Ruggs III.

Earlier, Tagovailoa connected on touchdown passes to Jerry Jeudy, Jaylen Waddle and Irv Smith Jr. The Heisman Trophy contender has thrown 25 touchdown passes without an intercepti­on this season.

Alabama (8-0, 5-0 SEC) beat Tennessee (3-4, 1-3) for the 12th straight year.

Clemson 41, NC State 7 — Trevor Lawrence threw for a career-high 308 yards, Travis Etienne rushed for three touchdowns and the No.3 Tigers (7-0, 4-0 ACC) turned an expected showdown into a rout against the No.16 Wolfpack (5-1, 2-1) in Clemson, S.C.

Michigan 21, Michigan State 7 — Shea Patterson threw two touchdown passes and the No.6 Wolverines (7-1, 5-0 Big Ten) snapped a streak of 17 consecutiv­e losses to ranked teams on the road with this win over the No. 24 Spartans (4-3, 2-2) in East Lansing, Mich.

Oklahoma 52, TCU 27 — Kyler Murray threw four touchdown passes, Kennedy Brooks and Trey Sermon had 100-yard rushing games with scores and the No. 9 Sooners (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) rebounded from their only loss this season to beat the Horned Frogs (3-4, 1-3) in Fort Worth, Texas. In New England games:

Dartmouth 28, Columbia 12 — Rashaad Cooper ran for 82 yards and a touchdown that led to 21 unanswered points in the second half and the Big Green (6-0, 3-0) rolled to a victory over the Lions (3-3, 0-3) in Ivy League action in New York.

The Big Green remained unbeaten when Cooper capped a nineplay, 75-yard drive with an 8-yard TD run at 11:21 in the third quarter for a 14-6 lead. Dartmouth used a trick play — wide receiver Drew Hunnicutt connecting with quarterbac­k Derek Kyler for a 21-yard TD pass just eight seconds into the final quarter to make it 21-6.

Delaware 38, New Hampshire 14 — Troy Reeder’s blocked punt and Cam Kitchen’s intercepti­on set up a pair of one-play drives sandwiched between halftime and the Blue Hens (5-2, 3-1 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n) went on to defeat the Wildcats (1-6, 0-4) in Durham, N.H.

William & Mary 27, Maine 20 — Nick Muse caught eight passes for 107 yards and a touchdown and the Tribe (4-3, 3-1 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n) beat the Black Bears (43, 3-1) in Williamsbu­rg, Va.

Stony Brook 52, URI 14 — Jordan Gowins and Donald Liotine combined for 236 yards rushing and three TDs as the Seawolves (6-2, 4-1 CAA) surged to a win over the Rams (4-3, 2-2) in Stony Brook, N.Y.
