Lightning make clear Point in win

-

Brayden Point had a goal and two assists and the Tampa Bay Lightning peppered the Blackhawks with 33 shots in a three-goal second period in a 6-3 victory last night in Chicago.

The 33 shots are the most in a period since 1997-98, when shots by period became an official NHL statistic.

Nikita Kucherov and Victor Hedman each had a goal and assist, and Anthony Cirelli and Yanni Gourde also scored as Tampa Bay fired a team-record 55 shots. Ryan Callahan added an empty-netter with 2:05 left.

Blackhawks rookie Alexandre Fortin scored his first NHL goal to tie it late in the first, but the Lightning took charge with their speed and exploited Chicago mistakes to skate away with the win.

David Kampf and Nick Schmaltz scored late in the third period for Chicago.

Schmaltz’ power-play goal with 3:48 left was awarded after a video review showed the puck had crossed the goal line within the glove of goalie Louis Domingue. It was the first power-play goal allowed by the Lightning in 29 chances this season.

Domingue made 33 saves in his second start this season. No. 1 goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy got a night off following a 5-4 overtime loss at Minnesota on Saturday.

Flames 4, Rangers 1 — Johnny Gaudreau and Garnet Hathaway each scored twice and backup goalie David Rittich made 44 saves as visiting Calgary beat New York.

The Flames had lost on their last six visits to Madison Square Garden, but their speed and opportunistic play was superior to the Rangers yesterday. Calgary scored three or more goals for the seventh straight game.

Mika Zibanejad scored for the Rangers, who were coming off an overtime loss at Washington on Wednesday after winning in a shootout over Colorado the previous night. The Rangers have had trouble scoring goals under new coach David Quinn. New York has yet to win in regulation.

Sabres 4, Ducks 2 — Rasmus Ristolainen scored a tiebreaking power-play goal early in the third period, and Buffalo rallied from a two-goal deficit to complete a Southern California sweep with a victory in Anaheim, Calif.

Kyle Okposo and Jeff Skinner scored 88 seconds apart in the second period to even it before Ristolainen ripped a rising slap shot through traffic and past former Sabres goalie Ryan Miller for his first goal of the season. Patrik Berglund added an empty-net goal as the Sabres followed up a blowout win over Los Angeles with a comeback in Orange County.

Okposo had a goal and an assist in his second multipoint game of the season, and Carter Hutton made several big saves in the frantic final minute. Sam Reinhart had two assists and Hutton stopped 26 shots as Buffalo wrapped up a five-game West Coast trip with three wins.

Miller made 41 saves for Anaheim against the organization with which he spent his first 12 professional seasons.
