Rookie’s 35 lifts Hawks over Cavs

-

Trae Young had 35 points with 11 assists — the best line for an NBA rookie in eight years — and Kent Bazemore scored 23 as the Atlanta Hawks rolled to an easy 133-111 win yesterday in Cleveland over the Cavaliers, who lost their home opener and fell to 0-3 in their first season without LeBron James.

The No. 5 overall pick in this year’s draft, Young shook off a slow start and showed why the Hawks believe he’s a future superstar. Young is the first rookie to reach at least 35 points and 10 assists since Steph Curry in 2010.

Young made six of Atlanta’s 22 3-pointers while overshadowing Cleveland rookie guard Collin Sexton. Young missed four of his first five shots but finished 13of-23 from the field. He struggled in his first two games, making just 12-of-32.

Kevin Love scored 16 and added 17 rebounds for the Cavs, who could be in for a very long season as they adjust to life after LeBron.

But Cleveland’s issues appear to be far deeper than no longer having the game’s best player. The Cavs aren’t playing professional level defense and have given up 116, 131 and 133 points in their first three games.

Kings 131, Thunder 120 — Iman Shumpert scored 26 points and Sacramento beat host Oklahoma City to spoil Russell Westbrook’s season debut.

Westbrook missed the preseason and the first two regular-season games after having a procedure to deal with inflammation in his right knee. He had 32 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in 35 minutes after averaging a triple-double the past two seasons,

De’Aaron Fox scored 22 points and Buddy Hield added 17 for the Kings, who shot 54.9 percent for their first win.

Paul George scored 29 points for the Thunder, who host the Celtics on Thursday night.

Nuggets 100, Warriors 98 — Gary Harris scored 28 points, Juancho Hernangomez blocked a tying layup just before the buzzer and host Denver beat Golden State.

Trailing by 13 points in the fourth quarter, the Warriors rallied and had a chance to tie it in the waning seconds. Stephen Curry drove down the lane and passed to big man Damian Jones, who had his shot blocked from behind by Hernangomez.

Nikola Jokic had 23 points, 11 rebounds and six assist in his bid for a triple-double on a second straight night.

Elsewhere in the NBA — Lakers teammates Brandon Ingram and Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul of the Rockets were suspended without pay for an on-court fight, with Paul taking the heaviest financial hit. Ingram was suspended four games,

Rondo will sit out three games and Paul two games. The NBA handed down the punishments a day after the incident in the fourth quarter Saturday at Staples Center.

The penalty was costliest to Paul, who was fined a total of $491,782. Rondo will be docked a total of

$186,207, while Ingram’s total is $158,816.
