Caravan proves the need for ICE

-

With a caravan of over 7,000 Central Americans making their way to the Southern border of the United States, it is more important than ever that our political leaders support our border and immigration personnel. Unfortunately, Sen. Elizabeth Warren continues to denigrate them and it is taking a toll.

As the Herald’s Sean Philip Cotter reports, Warren’s charge that ICE “doesn’t reflect our values” has unfairly “villainized” the immigration-enforcement agency with false claims about how it operates, ICE’s New England chief said.

“We’re villainized just for doing our jobs,” Todd Lyons, the acting director of ICE’s Boston office, said Monday on Herald columnist Howie Carr’s WRKO radio show. “There’s a lot of these statements lately. It just spreads more fear that doesn’t need to be there.”

During her debate with challenger Geoff Diehl on Friday night, Warren lashed out against ICE, saying, “I want to see this agency reformed, because an agency that can’t tell the difference in the risk between a 7-year-old girl, between a woman going in for brain cancer surgery and a terrorist or a criminal is an agency that is not working. It is not making us safer, and it sure doesn’t reflect our values.”

“No one in my office has ever put handcuffs on a 7-year-old boy or girl,” Lyons said.

“Unfortunately that one kind of hit home for all of us,” he said. “I have no idea where the senator got that from.”

Sen. Warren also lambasted ICE in June during a rally in front of City Hall in Boston. “The president’s deeply immoral actions have made it obvious we need to rebuild our immigration system from top to bottom, starting by replacing ICE with something that reflects our morality and that works,” she declared.

Casting aspersions on ICE and accusing it of abusing children and families is demonization of the worst kind.

There is a potential crisis unfolding at our border with Mexico. Law enforcement is all that stands between total lawlessness and criminality, and Elizabeth Warren should declare loud and clear her support for those keeping us safe and protecting our borders.
