Giants deal ‘other’ Eli to New Orleans

The New York Giants have sent “the other Eli” to the New Orleans Saints. Not Eli Manning. Eli Apple.

The Giants yesterday traded the cornerback who was the 10th pick overall in the 2016 draft to the Saints for a fourth-round pick in 2019 and a seventh-rounder in 2020. Like all trades, it will be not be official until Apple passes a physical.

The move marks the second time in a week the Giants have parted ways with a recent first-round draft pick. Last week, they waived tackle Ereck Flowers, their 2015 top pick. He was signed by Jacksonvil­le.

Apple has 23 tackles and a forced fumble. He also recovered a fumble in the Giants’ 23-20 loss to the Falcons in Atlanta on Monday night . . . .

Atlanta Falcons right guard Brandon Fusco will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a broken right ankle in Monday night’s win over the Giants . . . .

Denver Broncos backup quarterbac­k Chad Kelly was arrested on suspicion of criminal trespass after a couple reported he came into their suburban house uninvited and sat down on their couch “mumbling incoherent­ly,” according to court records.

General manager John Elway said the team was “very, very disappoint­ed in Chad and the situation he put himself into” and suggested the Broncos were pondering Kelly’s future with the club . . . .

The New York Jets signed wide receiver Rishard Matthews, who was released by Tennessee last month . . . . Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen is returning to the team after being out for the past month for a mental health evaluation.

Revolution midfielder Isaac Angking has been named to the U.S. Under-20 men’s national team roster for the CONCACAF Under-20 Championsh­ip in Bradenton, Fla., next month . . . .

Cristiano Ronaldo made another winning return to Old Trafford as Juventus beat his former club Manchester United 1-0 for a third straight victory in the Champions League.

Ronaldo didn’t score but was involved in the only goal, sending in a cross from the right wing that was swept home by Paulo Dybala in the 17th minute . . . .

Right back Noussair Mazraoui scored an injury-time winner as Ajax beat Benfica 1-0 to remain unbeaten in Champions League Group E.

Jury still out in NCAA hoop trial

A jury has completed a second day of deliberati­ons without a verdict in the trial of three men accused of defrauding schools by giving cash to families of college basketball recruits.

The jury deliberate­d over eight hours in Manhattan federal court. They are deciding the fate of Adidas sports marketing manager James “Jim” Gatto, aspiring sports agent Christophe­r Dawkins and Merl Code ,aformer Adidas consultant . . . .

Padres manager Andy Green says Mark McGwire won’t return as San Diego’s bench coach next season in order to spend more time with his family . . . .

Ohio State receiver Austin Mack is out indefinite­ly following foot surgery . . . .

TCU receiver and returner KaVontae Turpin was dismissed from the team after a second charge surfaced against him following his weekend arrest on an assault charge for an alleged altercatio­n with his girlfriend.
