Islanders put scare into Philly

-

The Flyers tried to make their annual Halloween game a festive occasion — popular mascot Gritty judged the costume contests during intermissions — but the only boos came from disgruntled fans each time Philly skated off the ice. The Islanders’ romp started early, and they seemed right at home against the listless Flyers. Brock Nelson scored two goals, Anders Lee had a goal and two assists and Robin Lehner stopped 22 shots to lead New York past the Flyers, 6-1, yesterday in Philadelphiada. Leo Komarov and Anthony Beauvillier also scored to help the Islanders take a 3-0 lead through two periods in a game between teams near the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Nelson scored in the first and third periods in his third straight game with a goal. “It doesn’t always have to be goals, just chances,” Nelson said. “If you can feed off of that, you can suffocate teams.” The Islanders opened a three-game road trip. They play eight of their first 11 games on the road this season. Capitals 4, Flames 3 — Nicklas Backstrom scored the shootout winner and Pheonix Copley earned his first career victory in goal as Washington won in Calgary. Matt Niskanen, Jakub Vrana and T.J. Oshie scored goals for Washington, which has won two of three on its Canadian trip. Playing in his fifth NHL game, Copley stopped 27-of30 shots in regulation and overtime and 4-of-5 in the shootout. The 26-year-old from North Pole, Alaska, hoisted the Stanley Cup with the Capitals last season when he was called up from the AHL for the playoffs. Now he’s the backup to Braden Holtby. Maple Leafs 3, Jets 2 — Jake Gardiner and Kasperi Kapanen scored in a late 26-second span and host Toronto overcame the loss of star Auston Matthews (left shoulder) to beat the Winnipeg. Oilers 5, Predators 3 — Leon Draisaitl and Drake Caggiula each scored twice and Edmonton ended a 13-game losing streak by winning in Nashville, Tenn. Connor McDavid also scored and Mika Koskinen made 24 saves in his first start of the season and first for the Oilers. Edmonton was 0-11-2 in its previous 13 games against the Predators. Filip Forsberg had a hat trick for Nashville, and Juuse Saros stopped 31 shots. Blue Jackets 5, Sabres 4 — Artemi Panarin scored 31 seconds into overtime to give hsot Columbus a victory against Buffalo. The Sabres got a pair of goals in a two-minute span in the third period to tie it, setting up the overtime snipe by Panarin, a shot from the left circle. Devils 3, Panthers 2 — Kyle Palmieri had a goal and an assist, Keith Kinkaid made 35 saves and host New Jersey stopped a three-game slide by edging Florida. Taylor Hall and Blake Coleman also scored for the Devils, who won for the first time since opening the season with four consecutive victories. Nico Hischier had two assists.
