76ers tip Hornets

Joel Embiid had 27 points and 14 rebounds while J.J. Redick and Robert Covington each hit key 3-pointers late to lead the 76ers to a 105-103 victory over the Charlotte Hornets last night in Philadelphia . Embiid was a game-time decision after injuring his left ankle in practice on Friday. But the Philadelphia big man didn’t favor his ankle at all while recording his sixth double-double in as many games to start the season. Covington had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Ben Simmons contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds for Philadelphia, which evened its record at 3-3. Kemba Walker scored 37 points for Charlotte. Walker needed 31 shots for his points, finishing 11-for-31 from the field and 3-for-15 from the arc. He entered second behind Steph Curry in 3-point attempts (64) and 3-pointers made (29). Bulls 97, Hawks 85 — Zach LaVine scored 27 points and the visiting Chicago went 7-of-10 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter to pull away for a victory over Atlanta. Jabari Parker scored half of his 18 points in the fourth quarter for the Bulls, who struggled from long range for the first three quarters, making 5-of-23 from beyond the arc. Rookie Wendell Carter Jr. had 10 points and 10 rebounds while playing his first NBA game in his hometown. Trae Young, who entered leading rookies with 21.5 points per game, scored 13 points on 3-of-12 shooting for the Hawks. Taurean Prince led Atlanta with 16 points and reserve Dewayne Dedmon had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Jazz 132, Pelicans 111 — Ricky Rubio had 28 points and 12 assists, Rudy Gobert had 25 points and 14 rebounds, and Utah became the first team this season to beat host New Orleans. New Orleans played without star forward Anthony Davis. He was ruled out shortly before the game because of his sprained right elbow — an injury through which he’d played in a victory a night earlier over Brooklyn. The Davis-Gobert matchup has been a competitive and compelling one in recent seasons. With Davis out, Gobert had his best game of the young season. He’d come in averaging 14.5 points and had not scored more than 19 points in a game this season. Rubio, who set up several Gobert dunks with alley-oop lobs, was averaging just 6 points coming in and hadn’t scored more than 13 in a game. Pacers 119 Cavaliers 107 — Bojan Bogdanovic scored 25 points, Victor Oladipo had 24 and visiting Indiana kept Cleveland winless this season. Cleveland (0-6) is off to its worst start since losing its first seven games in the 1995-96 season. The Cavaliers are struggling to adjust without LeBron James and also missed forward Kevin Love, who was out for the second straight game because of a sore left foot. Cleveland cut a 15-point lead to 97-91 early in the fourth quarter before Indiana regained control with four straight baskets. Darren Collison scored on a layup and a jumper, Oladipo hit a 12-footer and Domanta Sabonis scored in the lane. Grizzlies 117, Suns 96 — Marc Gasol scored 19 points, Mike Conley added 18 and host Memphis took a big lead in the first half before coasting to a victory over Phoenix, sending the Suns to their fourth straight loss. MarShon Brooks matched with 18 points, Garrett Temple added 15, and Wayne Selden 14.
