Terriers draw up point with Huskies

Overcome 3 deficits on road

The 5-5 tie between longtime rivals Boston University and Northeastern last night at Matthews Arena could be viewed in a variety of ways. NU, which squandered three leads (2-0, 3-2, 5-4), knew it opened the door for the Terriers to grab a much needed point. “Disappointed with the way the game ended up. When you’re up 2-0 and let the other team in, I told the guys that there are good ties. This wasn’t a good tie,’’ said Huskies coach Jim Madigan. “We played ping-pong with them.” BU, the defending Hockey East champion, came in uncharacteristically bereft of points so the road draw provided a modicum of confidence to both players and Terrier partisans in the crowd of 3,678. “It was a great college hockey game and I like the way we played.’’ said firstyear BU coach Albie O’Connell. “We showed a lot of guts coming back.’’ An early surprise had BU goalie Jake Oettinger on the bench while redshirt junior Max Prawdzik of Andover started between the pipes as O’Connell sought to shake up his club. The experiement lasted all of 3 minutes, 29 seconds as No. 13 NU (4-2-1, 1-0-1 ) exploded for a pair of goals within a span of 1 minute and four seconds starting at the 2:07 mark. The Huskies scored on the first shot on net off the stick of junior Grant Jozefek, who sniped his fifth goal of the season. NU sophomore right winger Bobby Hampton got behind a checker and redirected a pass from UMass transfer Austin Plevy at 3:11 for his first goal of the season. Eetu Selanne picked up the other assist on the play. The scoring outburst caused O’Connell to call on Oettinger (27 saves). “Just a different look,’’ said O’Connell. “Max works hard and is a pretty confident kid. It didn’t work out that way. After he let in the two quick ones I went right back to Jake. I didn’t want it to get out of hand.’’ BU (0-4-1, 0-2-1 ) was skating shorthanded when sophomore left winger Logan Cockerill took possession near the bench area and raced away on a break. Cockerill snapped a wrist shot over the blocker of Huskies goalie Cayden Primeau (career-high 45 saves) for his first goal. The shorthander, the third allowed by NU this season, halted a consecutive scoreless streak of 140:23 for BU. “We like our team when we shoot the puck,’’ O’Con- nell said. “Too many times we were trying to play shinny (hockey) the first four games.’’ Junior right winger Patrick Curry deflected a left point blast by sophomore defenseman Kasper Kotkansalo into the net at 3:13 of the third to knot the score. The relentless Terriers connected twice in a span of 1:23 to grab a 4-3 lead. Freshman right winger Joel Farabee shoveled in a loose puck at 2:42. Senior co-captain Bobo Carpenter followed with his third goal at 4:05. Moments later, NU needed only 23 seconds of a twoman advantage to pull even when Jozefek potted a rebound in front for his second of the game and sixth of the season at 6:06. Schule added his second of the night at 10:57. BU answered with a power-play goal at 12:27 as junior defenseman Chad Krys drilled a right point blast that broke in off the body of Primeau.
