Trahan hopes for change, unity in Congress

- By JONATHAN NG — jng@bostonherald.com

Lori Trahan called for a “new Congress” yesterday on Boston Herald Radio hours before Democrats seized control of the House.

Trahan, who won the 3rd District seat, said her constituents need a leader who will work on issues that matter. Congress is “not coming together to solve our immigration issues. No solution for opioids that is taking a lot of our young. Clearly, what I hear is they want their Congress to work,” she said.

“I’m not looking at this as revenge,” Trahan said, instead looking for “opportunities to bring the country together.”

On the campaign trail, Trahan said she “will be effective” at listening to concerns raised by her district.

“You understand their community, their concerns, their family,” she said.

Trahan said “you learn about yourself ” when campaigning, from speeches, debates and rallies. “It’s a personal journey,” she said. “You have conversations with people you’ve never met before ... stories stick with you for a lifetime,” and “will stick with me in Washington.”

Trahan said she was “grateful (Nancy Pelosi) came up when she did” but would not make a decision to install her as Majority leader “until I get elected” and if the Democrats take over the House.

“People come out to vote ... (want) change in leadership,” Trahan said. “I hope to be a part of that change.”

She won the seat easily feding off two rivals.
