After playing to two draws in the regular season, it was inevitable that the third matchup between Whitman-Hanson and Hingham, with much higher stakes, would come down to the wire.

And the only thing separating them last night in a Division 1 South quarterfinal at Dennis M. O’Brien Field in Whitman was a sensational tally from Hingham’s Lilly Reale with a minute left in regulation.

Reale uncorked a leftfooted blast from 30 yards out into the corner of the net in the 79th minute to lift No. 6 Hingham over thirdseeded Whitman-Hanson, 2-1.

“A lot of the burden has gone on (Reale) when we had Kira (Maguire) go down and she rose to the occasion big time,” said Hingham coach Ryan Puntiri as the Harborwomen (14-1-5) advance to face

Natick. “She can strike the ball as well as anybody and she saw an opportunity and let it fly.”

After several near-misses in the first half, Hingham struck first less than two minutes into the second half when Reale flicked in a shot in a scrum off a corner.

Whitman-Hanson (142-4) pressed for the equalizer and finally got it in the 69th minute. The Panthers played a ball over the top of Hingham’s defense and Riley Bina ran on to it and beat a charging keeper to level the score.

After the shock of the Panthers’ game-tying goal wore off, Reale, who was tightly marked all game, received just enough space in the middle of the field to get off her game-winning shot.

“I was mentally in shock like, ‘We just got scored on. There’s only so many minutes left in the game,’” Reale said. “I just wanted to help our team. We all gathered at one of the timeouts and said, ‘We can do this still.’”
