Kerry in Twitter spat with Fox host

A Twitter showdown between John F. Kerry and a Fox News host was hardly diplomatic.

The former U.S. secretary of state and Democratic presidential nominee took on Greg Gutfeld of Fox in a Veterans Day weekend smackdown.

The battle began with Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War vet, criticizing President Trump for skipping a trip to a World War I cemetery in France Saturday due to rain.

“President @realDonaldTrump a no-show because of raindrops?” Kerry tweeted. “Those veterans the president didn’t bother to honor fought in the rain, in the mud, in the snow — & many died in trenches for the cause of freedom. Rain didn’t stop them & it shouldn’t have stopped an American president.”

Gutfeld jumped on the social-media platform slamming the former Bay State U.S. senator with a dig at his past, writing that he “didn’t stop ISIS” and “sent James Taylor instead,” referring to the backlash the White House faced under former President Barack Obama for failing to dispatch a top-level official to a solidarity march in Paris in 2015. Doing damage control less than a week later, thenSecretary of State Kerry brought singer-songwriter James Taylor along to perform.

Gutfeld ended his tweet by telling Kerry, “Plug you knothole, Captain Driftwood,” likely referencing the “Swift Boat” controversy surrounding Kerry’s military service that was used as a talking point against him in his 2004 run for president.

Firing back, Kerry wrote, “Happy Veterans Day, Greg. I’m glad that all of us who served in uniform fought to defend your freedom to be a complete fool on Twitter. #freedomisntfree.”

Gutfeld responded with a link to the James Taylor song, “You’ve got a friend.”
