RUN, CHARLIE, RUN
Challenge to Markey would be Capitol idea
Word is Gov. Charlie Baker is mulling a 2020 run against U.S. Sen. Edward J. Markey. He should think about it harder.
Baker is highly respected among Democrats and Republicans alike for being able to play nice. Most voters love having an adult in the Corner Office and long for the same in our nation’s capital.
Baker has a better relationship with the state Legislature than his predecessor, Deval Patrick. Sometimes he even gets criticized for getting along too well with Democrats. Imagine that being a problem in Washington? By today’s standards, that’s a fairy tale and a funny joke.
Charlie Baker is exactly what D.C. needs — a role model to show these divisive politicians how people with differing views can find common ground. While any Senate run would mean he’d be deserting the commonwealth before his term is up, he would be leaving behind a very capable female who would be a phenomenal governor.
Karyn Polito can continue the great work she and Baker have been able to accomplish and also put her own stamp on the Bay State. At a time when more women are getting elected it would be another great step forward for this female movement across the country. Polito has been a good foot soldier for Baker but it is time for her to step out of his shadow.
Baker relied on the National Republican Party in both his races to win. With two victories under his belt the odds are good for a third successful run at the ballot box. So, it’s likely a variety of outside groups would pour money into the race knowing his wins and believing that a bet on Baker could turn a historically blue seat into a red one — or at least a touch of red.
It was remarkable to see the millions of dollars he raised during his latest gubernatorial race. It wasn’t necessary given his competition, but it spoke volumes.
Baker was testing the waters to see just how much he could bank in preparation for a different campaign that would require a solid war chest in order to seal the deal and knock out a sitting senator.
Markey is the opposite of what we need in D.C. right now. He uses scare tactics in order to get out the vote instead of good ideas his fellow Democrats are promising.
Go for it Charlie!
