Extra special win for Warriors

- By BRIAN ROACH

In the historic 88th meeting between Mansfield and Foxboro, there was a little extra time needed to crown a winner.

Foxboro was able to finish its season with wins in four of five contests as senior captain Liam Foley hit senior Mike Luong for a 9-yard score in triple overtime to give the Warriors a 35-33 victory against Mansfield last night at Fenway Park.

After Foxboro added the two-point conversion, Mansfield scored on a 3-yard run for sophomore Cincere Gill. A holding call on the two-point try was too much for the Hornets to get even again.

In the first overtime, neither team converted their two-point tries. Senior Liam Foley hit Brian Derba for a 10-yard score for Foxboro and Mansfield got a 10-yard scamper for senior Aidan Sacco as the teams were tied 27-27.

In the second OT, Mansfield came a yard short on their chance and a Foxboro field goal was blocked.

Mike Luong scored with 10:45 left in regulation as he punched in a 1-yard run as well as the two-point conversion rush to give Foxboro the 14-13 edge.

The defense then stepped up as Mansfield drove to the Foxboro 21 before a high snap lost 19 yards. A failed fourth-down screen pass three plays later led to a turnover on downs for the Hornets.

This led to a 57-yard strike from Foley to junior Shayne Kerrigan on a third-and-9 play to seemingly seal the deal, 21-13, with 2:33 left.

Mansfield then put together a 15-play, 64-yard drive capped off by a 5-yard TD grab for senior Khristian Connor off a pass from junior Jack Mousette. A twopoint rush for Gill knotted the score 21-21 to force the overtime period.

Luong also scored another 1-yard TD to tie the score 6-6 six plays after a 48-yard pass from Foley to senior Rob Fay.

Junior Joe Plath got the scoring started early in the second quarter as he scampered in from 5 yards out after a 49-yard run up the sideline for Gill to put Mansfield up 6-0.

The only other score for Mansfield came on a 68yard run for senior captain Aidan Sacco with 6:13 left in the third quarter as the Hornets led 13-6.
