Skinner, Sabres tip Habs in OT

Jeff Skinner scored 3:06 into overtime after getting the tying goal late in regulation, and the Sabres beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 yesterday in Buffalo for their eighth straight victory.

Buffalo’s win streak is the longest in the NHL at the moment and the team’s best stretch since winning 10 in a row to start the 2006-07 season. Casey Mittelstad­t also scored for the Sabres, and Carter Hutton made 31 saves.

Brendan Gallagher and Andrew Shaw scored for the Canadiens, who have lost three straight and will host the Bruins tonight.

Skinner scored the winning goal on a 4-on-3 power play after drawing a slashing penalty on Montreal’s Max Domi. Skinner knocked in the rebound of Jack Eichel’s shot while falling down near the front of the net, earning his team-leading 17th goal of the season.

Blue Jackets 4, Maple Leafs 2 — Cam Atkinson scored for the sixth straight game, and host Columbus beat Toronto to remain atop the Metropolit­an Division.

Josh Anderson had two goals and Markus Hannikaine­n also scored, helping the Blue Jackets avenge a 4-2 loss at Toronto on Monday. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 32 shots for his eighth win.

Flyers 4, Rangers 0 — Sean Couturier scored a pair of goals, Calvin Pickard made 31 saves in his fourth career shutout and host Philadelph­ia beat New York to stop a four-game losing streak.

Capitals 3, Red Wings 1 — Michal Kempny and Alex Ovechkin scored 1:56 apart in the third period, helping host Washington beat Detroit for its season-high fourth consecutiv­e victory.

Lightning 4, Blackhawks 2 — Tyler Johnson scored twice, Nikita Kucherov had three assists and Tampa Bay beat Chicago in Tampa. Hurricanes 4, Panthers 1 — In Raleigh, N.C., Jordan Martinook recorded a hat trick and Carolina defeated Florida Martinook scored in the first period and added two goals in the third for the Hurricanes.

Ducks 2, Oilers 1 — Rickard Rakell scored 14 seconds into overtime, and host Anaheim rallied to beat Edmonton. Nick Ritchie tied the game with 16.2 seconds remaining, and John Gibson made 27 saves for the Ducks.

Wild 4, Jets 2 — Eric Staal scored with 2:31 remaining to send Minnesota to a win against Winnipeg in an emotional, penalty-filled matchup in St. Paul, Minn.

Blues 6, Predators 2 — Ryan O’Reilly, Brayden Schenn and Alex Pietrangel­o finished with a goal and an assist, and host St. Louis snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over Nashville.

Islanders 4, Devils 3 — Mathew Barzal scored on a his own rebound after being stopped on a breakaway at 3:40 of overtime and New York beat New Jersey in Newark. Stars 6, Senators 4 — Miro Heiskanen scored two goals, and host Dallas rallied to beat Ottawa

Avalanche 5, Coyotes 1 — In Glendale, Ariz., J.T. Compher scored a pair of shorthande­d goals in his return after missing 16 games due to injury, and Colorado defeated Arizona. Golden Knights 2, Flames 0 — Alex Tuch had a goal and an assist in his 100th career game, and host Vegas beat Calgary.
