Gillespie’s 17 lead Villanova

Collin Gillespie had 17 points, including two key late free throws, and Villanova won the AdvoCare Invitation­al in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., yesterday by beating No. 14 Florida State, 66-60.

Gillespie made it 64-60 by hitting a pair of free throws with 11.2 seconds left in a tight second half.

“He loves the competitio­n,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “I’m just glad he’s on our side.”

Eric Paschall had 15 points and Phil Booth chipped in 12 for the defending national champion Wildcats (5-2).

FSU (5-1) got 11 points from Mfiondu Kabengele and Trent Forrest.

“They did a much better job of playing to their strengths than we did ours,” Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said. “I thought our guys gave good effort. I think that we’re a team that has a chance to develop into a pretty good basketball team.”

The Seminoles’ next game is Wednesday night against No. 24 Purdue.

Villanova droped from No. 8 out of the Top 25 — the first time since December 2013 — in last week’s poll after losing to Michigan 73-46 in a rematch of last season’s title game and losing 7668 in overtime to Furman.

Oklahoma State 90, No. 19 LSU 77 — Cameron McGriff had 28 points, Lindy Waters added 16, and the Cowboys (4-2) defeated the No. 19 Tigers (5-2) in the third-place game of the AdvoCare Invitation­al in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The Cowboys were 6-6 against ranked teams last season. Skylar Mays scored 20 points for the Tigers , who were coming off a 79-76 overtime loss to No. 14 Florida State.

McGriff hit a 3 and Waters made three free throws during a secondhalf opening 15-2 run that put Oklahoma State ahead 57-39 with 13 minutes left.

Michael Weathers’ layup extended the Cowboys lead to 68-48 midway through the second half.

LSU missed 12-of-13 shots during the surge.

McGriff had 13 points as Oklahoma State grabbed a 42-37 halftime advantage. In New England games: Brown 84, Bryant 60 — Desmond Cambridge scored 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked three shots as the Bears (5-2) breezed past the Bulldogs (1-4) in Providence.

Fairfield 86, Denver 85 — Landon Taliaferro scored 21 points including the goahead layup with 1:41 left as the Stags (2-5) edged the Pioneers (2-4) in an Elgin Baylor Classic game in Seattle.

Quinnipiac 58, Maine 50 — Tyrese Williams made four 3-pointers for a career-high 19 points with seven rebounds, Aaron Robinson hit big shots in the second half and the Bobcats (2-2) rallied to beat the Black Bears (0-6) in Hamden, Conn.

Bucknell 69, Vermont 61 — Nate Sestina scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Kimbal Mackenzie (13 points) made a go-ahead jumper, and the Bison (2-2) rallied from 13 down to beat the Catamounts (3-3) in Burlington, Vt.

Duquesne 83, UMass-Lowell 71 — Eric Williams Jr. finished with 22 points and four steals and Michael Hughes scored a careerhigh 19 to power the Dukes (4-1) past the River Hawks (4-4) in Pittsburgh.

Alex Rivera, who averages 13.8 points per game off the bench, scored 19 to lead UMass-Lowell.

Central Connecticu­t 88, Pine Manor 59 — Tyler Kohl poured in 29 points and added eight rebounds and three assists to send Central Connecticu­t as the Blue Devils (4-3) cruised past the Divsion 3 Gators (1-5) in New Britain, Conn.
