FOXBORO – It was supposed to be a momentous occasion for Catholic Memorial with the Knights back in the Super Bowl for the first time in 40 years. But while CM looked for the icing on top, senior wide receiver Wes Rockett and St. John’s Prep spoiled it. Rockett, who missed all of last season with a torn meniscus, caught nine passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns as the Eagles ran away from the Knights, 40-22, to claim the Division 1 Super Bowl title last night at Gillette Stadium. Trailing 16-0 at halftime, CM (9-3) fought back and took its first lead when Barrett Pratt found Owen McGowan in the end zone from 14 yards out. Pratt then hit Jamall Griffin Jr. for the 2-point conversion and a 2219 lead midway through the third quarter. But Rockett revitalized the Prep’s passing game to help the Eagles jump back in front. After seven straight incompletions by Matt Crowley, he connected with Rockett twice, including on a 21-yard pass that Rockett caught with a defender draped over him in the end zone for a 26-22 lead with 56 seconds left in the third quarter. An interception by Antael Rosa set up the Prep’s next score, which came on a 4-yard run by Aise Pream before Rockett capped his performance with a 25-yard touchdown reception late in the fourth quarter. The Prep (10-2) got off to a quick start as Pream scored on a 6-yard run on the Eagles’ opening series. A 36yard field goal by Sean Majeski before Crowley connected with Rockett on a 52-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter extended the Prep’s lead to 16-0. While CM’s offense mustered only 26 yards of offense in the first half, the Knights’ defense came up with a much-needed spark. Two plays after Will Stockwell recovered a fumble, Pratt tossed a 23-yard touchdown to Daniel Lopes. Just over a minute later CM’s defense sprang into action again. This time Stockwell forced a fumble and Devon Williams picked it up and raced 47 yards to pay dirt to get within, 14-12. But CM’s defense couldn’t take contain the CrowleyRockett connection as the Eagles secured its first Super Bowl title since 2012.
