Dig into tasty salads and exercise to make room for holidays treats
Eating a well-balanced diet and working out is all part of a healthy lifestyle, but during the holidays many of us let those things slide. If you’re looking for some extra motivation to stay on the straight and narrow between holiday feasts, just head to the Fenway neighborhood.
For a workout that will whip you back into shape and also help you relieve the stress of the season, head to the brand-new 305 Fitness, which just opened at 506 Commonwealth Ave., next to the Kenmore T station. 305 Fitness describes its workouts as “cardio parties” — live DJ and all. It’s a fun way to burn off those sugar cookies, or get a jump
on those New Year’s resolutions.
If you want to give your body a breather from all the heavy holiday indulgences (not that there’s anything wrong with those), but also kick the sad-desk-lunch to the curb, there are two sensational salads worth checking out. Jody Adams’ Saloniki Greek, at 4 Kilmarnock St., has a tasty new salad made with chopped kale and greens, graviera cheese, roasted delicata squash, Greek olives, toasted walnuts, rose water and house-made vinaigrette.
With a location in the Fenway and others throughout Boston, Sweetgreen has a new salad created in collaboration with chef Dan Barber. The Koginut Squash Bowl features a new breed of squash as well as lemon-dill fennel, pears, basil, walnuts, toasted almonds, toasted buck- wheat, organic wild rice, organic baby spinach, lemon and a balsamic vinaigrette.
“We enjoy working with Sweetgreen because of the underlying passion we both share for achieving something better tasting than the conventional product. Sweetgreen desires the best tasting produce, which we are proud to be able to offer them,” said Jim Ward, one of the local farmers that Sweetgreen sources from for the Boston area. “We grow about 40 acres of winter squash at our farm in Sharon, Mass., so we were happy to take part in this collaboration with Sweetgreen.”
Don’t worry, you can still hit the egg nog and pies, but a salad and a workout here and there will make those holiday treats just that much more sweet!
