Quick start helps BC High cruise past CM

- BY GREG DUDEK

BC High’s offense doesn’t need much space, or time for that matter to display the firepower it possesses.

And the Eagles offense delivered once again last night, dictating play from the opening whistle in a Catholic Conference showdown with Catholic Memorial.

BC High scored three goals within the first 6:05 of the contest to take a commanding lead and never looked back to defeat the Knights, 5-1, at Warrior Ice Arena.

“We knew we had to play to our strengths and our strength is obviously speed,” BC High coach John Flaherty said. “We wanted to have them on their heels and what better way to do that than jump out early.”

BC High (7-1-1) bombarded Catholic Memorial (7-2) with shots from the outset and the Knights capsized shortly there after.

The Eagles struck just 2:22 in when a terrific pass out of the defensive zone from Michael Dragon set up a 2-on-1 and Thomas Kramer finished it off with a top shelf tally after receiving a pass from his younger brother, Peter Kramer.

BC High sustained its offensive pressure and extended its lead with Joseph Kramer carrying the puck down the left wing and firing in a shot two minutes later.

Matt Lakus kept the Eagles rolling by putting in his own rebound for a 3-0 lead with 8:55 left in the opening period.

“We just came out buzzing, going hard every shift, making a statement,” Lakus said. “Making them know that we’re not here to mess around.”

CM negated any chance at a comeback by committing five penalties in the second period and only getting off four shots in the frame.

The Eagles capitalized on the man-advantage with two power-play goals from Lakus and Dragon sandwiched around a tally from CM’s Tommy Rooney.

“We’re just happy about executing and playing the game that we wanted to play,” Flaherty said.

Senior captain Nick Capillo led Peabody (1-8-1) to its first win in almost two years with a hat-trick and an assist for a 6-5 upset over Northeastern Conference foe Danvers.

Griffin Lynch scored on a breakaway with 22 seconds left to give Quincy (9-2-0) a 1-0 nonleague victory against Bridgewater-Raynham.

Freshman Sean McWhinnie scored two goals for Natick (4-5-1) as part of a 3-2 Bay State Conference win over Braintree.

Girls hockey

In a Bay State crossover, freshmen Ava Sullivan and Isabella Ventura scored their first varsity goals with two and one respectively, leading Framingham (1-8) past Weymouth, 3-0

Sophomore Lucy Riordan stopped 23 shots to pick up her first varsity shutout, helping boost Ursuline (5-5-1) in a 4-0 nonleague victory against Oakmont.

Boys basketball

Behind sophomore Abukar Aden’s 19 points and seven assists, New Mission (7-2) came up big to upset TechBoston, 67-64, in Boston City League action.
