The foodie’s guide to February vacation week

- By J. Q. LOUISE

February vacation is days away. Stumped at what to do with the kids all week? Here are a few tips that should keep both the little ones and adults happy.

Head north to Sugarbush

February vacation was meant for skiing. Grab the whole family and head north. While Sugarbush (102 Forest Drive, Warren, Vt.) is far north enough that it doesn’t get the extreme crowds that more southern resorts do, it is still only about a three-hour drive from Boston. And it has some of the coolest dining options at a ski mountain on the East Coast.

When you arrive, the little ones can grab a tasty crepe at the Skinny Pancake at the base of the mountain. At lunchtime, take the scenic Slidebrook Express lift over to Mount Ellen and have lunch at Walt’s for some gourmet grilled cheeses and some craft brews or cocktails for the adults.

After a nice chairlift ride through the valley back to Lincoln Peak for some afternoon runs, the kids can play in the heated pool at the Claybrook Hotel and the adults can enjoy some apres

music and drinks at Castlerock Pub. In the evening, you can even have a candlelit dinner up in Allyn’s Lodge, the mid-peak lodge on Lincoln Peak, and then ski down under the moonlight. All these great dining options mean you will be sufficiently refueled for day after day of hitting the slopes! For more information, go to sugarbush.com.

Staycation at the Row Hotel

If skiing is not your family’s thing, treat yourselves to a staycation right here! The Row Hotel at Assembly Row (360 Foley St., Somerville) is offering a “February Family Fun” package. This starts at $239 a night and includes accommodations for up to four guests, access to discounted tickets to the Legoland Discovery Center (located right in Assembly Row), a kid-friendly movie night, cocktails for the adults and breakfast for four. And the dining options at the Row are just perfect for the foodie family, starting with breakfast, which features creative takes on classics. Then for an afternoon snack, grab the kids some hot chocolate while the adults can enjoy a cocktail at the lobby bar, and for dinner you have to try the Reflections restaurant. Dishes like Tuna Poke and Pork Belly are a can’t miss. Go on a food tour of Boston

If your kids are little gourmets, expand their horizons by visiting one of Boston’s many diverse foodie neighborhoods. There is so much to try in Boston, use February vacation to take your family somewhere you don’t normally visit. Maybe this means heading to Eastie to try the tacos at Taqueria Jalisco (291 Bennington St.) or heading into Chinatown to try some Asian fusion fare at Shojo (9 Tyler St.) or visiting the South End for a fabulous brunch at Aquitaine (569 Tremont St.). There are so many amazing restaurants all over Boston, and many local attractions are having special February vacation events. For example, the MFA has a calendar of free events the whole week. For the schedule of events at the MFA, go to mfa.org/programs/special-event/february-vacation-week.
