Learn the Wong way

- BY MOIRA MCCARTHY

It’s time to ski the Wong way again this season. World renowned freestyle legend Wayne Wong comes back to Nashoba Valley Ski Resort Friday-Sunday to offer tips and even teach some tricks along with former Olympic downhiller Pam Fletcher.

The two, who have a lifelong friendship, offer this unique experience annually.

It’s offered to intermediate, advanced and expert skiers, at — get this — no additional cost. All you need is a Nashoba lift ticket for that day or a Nashoba season pass and you can join in by showing up. Wong and Fletcher will be out on the slopes each day, providing tips to help skiers improve their skills, try a few freestyle tricks, and learn how to have more fun skiing.

Nashoba Valley Ski Area has been a special relationship with Wong since Alan Fletcher Sr. met him at a Freestyle competition up at Waterville Valley back in the early 1970s. Their friendship ignited over the years as Wong was invited each season to come to Nashoba and put on freestyle demonstrations and give tips to the skiing public. Now Wong, who resides at Squaw Valley, Calif., says, “I won’t miss this special visit to Nashoba Valley Ski Area. I look forward to skiing with everyone each year.”

It seems he means it: This will be Wong’s 45th annual visit to Nashoba.

Fletcher said the event is always a special one for the entire resort.

“I look forward to working with Wayne each season. Wayne Wong is a great ambassador for not only freestyle skiing but for the sport of skiing in general,” said Fletcher, a 1988 Olympian adn 10-year U.S. Ski Team veteran. “He has a wonderful way of generating enthusiasm for the sport. Wayne loves working with people and regardless of their technique, he can always find some useful tips to help skiers better their skills. Our clinics are unique in that we have different styles of communication. When we work together, we really feel the positive impact of our individual insights. We also have a lot of fun with the guests and when you are having fun, it is so much easier to learn.”

Any discussion about the early years of “Hot Dog” freestyle skiing will probably include the iconic name Wayne Wong. Wong’s look, style and all the latest freestyle ski moves are what propelled him into the limelight of the era.

His signature tricks on the snow, great smile and personality made him a cultural icon of the early freestyle era. After years of competition at a world class level, Wong remained on the ski scene.

Whether it is coaching Olympic hopefuls or skiing with corporate executives, his purpose remains the same — to share what he loves. On the snow, Wong is an absolute technician, not only in style and technique, but he truly understands equipment science and design.

To ski with Wong and Fletcher, simply show up at Nashoba this weekend. They’ll be waiting for you and ready for fun.
