Make a run for roses

- BY MOIRA MCCARTHY

A look at upcoming events around New England:

Feb. 14: Runs N’ Roses, Gunstock, N.H.: “Every Rose has it’s run,” or something like that. For special Valentine’s Day fun, Gunstock has hidden 50 roses across their night skiing and tubing trails. Find one and you get to spin the Valentine’s prize wheel in the Powder Keg bar. Find the one golden rose and you can choose to forgo your individual rooms and head to the fantasy suite. Well not exactly, but you will win a one night stay for two at the nearby Lantern Inn B&B.

Feb. 14: Half-Priced Tickets, Wachusett: Love bird or burned by love, it matters not on this Valentine’s Day because rather than that “only for love” two-for-one deal, Wachusett is offering half-priced tickets for skiing and riding from 7-10 p.m.

Feb. 14: Pay the date, Sugarbush, Vt.: Valentines, schmalentines. Anyone loves this: pay just $14 for all-day lift tickets on Valentine’s Day. No gimics, no professions of love, other than for skiing and riding. Purchase ahead or at the ticket window that day.

Feb. 16: Cranapalooza. Cranmore, N.H.: Do Apres the family fun way with this now classic mountain celebration. From 2:30-4:30 p.m. on the Cranmore town square you’ll find family games, a DJ spinning tunes, C-More the Penguin, smores and more. Cranapalooza takes place every afternoon for the entire week beginning Feb. 16.

Feb. 17: Eddy and Betty Dinner, Sunday River, Maine: Sunday River’s mountainside gourmet dinners are legendary. This school vacation week they spin it family style with their mascots Eddy and Betty hosting a family friendly dinner in the Grand Summit Hotel ballroom. Nosh on kiddie favorites like chicken fingers and tater tots or more adult fare like chicken broccoli alfredo. There’s bouncy house fun and after-dinner entertainment too.

Feb. 16: Base lodge sledding, Burke Mountain, Vt.: Remember being a kid and sneaking out at night to sled down the resort trails? Burke makes it more “legal” but just as fun as they offer base lodge sledding from 5-7 p.m. Should you not have just the right sled, they rent them for $5. Helmets required.

Feb. 19: Kitty Litter Cardboard Race, Wildcat, N.H.: Dig out those cardboard boxes, put on your creative hat, build the ultimate cardboard vessel and then head to Wildcat to race and win big. This free race takes place midday, and with prizes for everything from fastest to best decorated to best crash, you are bound to win.
