Dot man faces charges in shooting over $10
Sparked by Woburn altercation
A 28-year-old Dorchester man faces assault and firearm charges after his alleged involvement in the shooting of a 43-year-old Woburn man over $10, authorities said.
Asa Cooper, 28 of Dorchester will be arraigned Tuesday at Woburn District Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing injury, assault to murder with a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, possession of a firearm without a license and illegal possession of ammunition.
At about midnight Saturday, Woburn police responded to a Highland Street home after reports of shots fired. Officers found the 43year-old man suffering from two gunshot wounds in his legs. He was rushed to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
An altercation allegedly started when a group of people standing outside a home were approached by a second group, including Cooper, inside a minivan.
The two groups began to argue over $10, witnesses said, and the victim was then shot multiple times, according to police. The minivan then fled the scene.
Stoneham police and Massachusetts State Police on the on-ramp to Interstate 93 south in Woburn later spotted the suspect van. The van had a logo with the business name “One Call” on one side and a “school bus” sign on the roof, police said.
Police found four people in the van, including Cooper, who was riding as a passenger. After an investigation, Cooper was arrested for his alleged involvement in the shooting. The three other people in the van were not arrested. The van was seized as evidence.
No weapons have been recovered and the incident remains under investigation, Woburn police said, adding the victim and suspect are known to each other and the incident was not random.
