Holy Cross names Nelson hoop coach

Holy Cross named Marquette assistant Brett Nelson its next men’s basketball coach, replacing the retired Bill Carmody.

Athletic director Marcus Blossom announced the hire yesterday, less than a month after Carmody retired. The 38-year-old Nelson spent the last five seasons at Marquette, including two as associate head coach.

He helped guide the Golden Eagles to NCAA tournament appearance­s in 2016-17 and 2018-19, a second-place finish in the Big East this past season and the NIT quarterfin­als in 2017-18.

Nelson previously coached at Ball State, Drake, Arkansas and Marshall. He was an All-American at Florida, where he was a three-year starter and member of four NCAA tournament teams, including the Gators’ 2000 team that reached the national championsh­ip game . ...

Louisiana-Lafayette baseball coach Tony Robichaux, who earned nearly 1,200 career wins and led the Ragin’ Cajuns to a 2000 College World Series appearance, has died. He was 57.

NBA: Layman to T’wolves

The Minnesota Timberwolv­es are acquiring Portland Trail Blazers forward Jake Layman in a sign-andtrade, according to ESPN. Layman, a former King Philip star, reportedly is signing a three-year, $11.5 million contract with Minnesota.

In return, the Blazers will receive the rights to center Bojan Dubljevic.

Layman averaged 7.6 points in 18.7 minutes per game this season, his third in Portland . ...

The Atlanta Hawks acquired veteran forward Chandler Parsons ina trade that sent Miles Plumlee and Solomon Hill to Memphis . ...

The Detroit Pistons and Markieff Morris have agreed on a two-year contract. The 6-foot-10 forward played a career-low 58 games last season, limited by a neck injury, for Washington and Oklahoma City.

He is the twin brother of free agent Marcus Morris, who played for the Celtics the past two seasons and previously played for the Pistons . ...

The Portland Trail Blazers announced the signings of forwards Mario Hezonja and Anthony Tolliver.

Hezonja, the No. 5 pick in the 2015 draft by Orlando, played three seasons with the Magic before spending last season with the New York Knicks. Tolliver spent last season with Minnesota . ...

NFL: Ex-QB Lorenzen dead

Jared Lorenzen, a husky left-handed quarterbac­k who set multiple Kentucky passing and offensive records before backing up Eli Manning on the New York Giants, has died. He was 38.

Lorenzen was listed at 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds his senior season and known by several nicknames including “The Hefty Lefty.”

A member of the Giants from 2004-07, Lorenzen was on the squad that upset the unbeaten Patriots in Super Bowl XLII . ...

Ezekiel Elliott won’t be suspended over an incident in Las Vegas that police said involved an altercatio­n between the star running back of the Dallas Cowboys and a security guard.

The NFL said commission­er Roger Goodell determined Elliott didn’t violate the league’s personal conduct policy. The two-time rushing champion was suspended for six games in 2017 over domestic violence allegation­s.

Soccer: Peru in Copa final

Peru stunned two-time defending Chile in the semifinals of the Copa América in Porto Alegre, setting up a final Sunday against host Brazil.

Edison Flores, Yoshimar Yotún and Paolo Guerrero scored a goal each to lead Peru to a 3-0 win and a spot in the final for the first time since 1975, when it last won the South American tournament.

Brazil beat Argentina, 2-0, in the other semifinal Tuesday.
