Two serious car crashes in Medford Thursday and Boston early Friday ended in several injuries and one death, police said.

Just over two hours after the fireworks display on the Charles River, state police responded to a rollover crash on Back Street, parallel to Storrow Drive, which had been closed because of the Independence Day festivities.

The operator, identified by police as 27-year-old Alexander Galanis of Stoughton, reportedly drove around barriers at the Charlesgate East on-ramps to enter the closed portion of Storrow Drive and hit a building, police said.

Galanis was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital and pronounced dead.

Galanis’ two passengers were injured. A 38-year-old man from Cape Coral, Fla., was transported to Brigham and Women’s Hospital with serious injuries, and 32year-old man from Fall River was transported to Beth Israel Hospital with minor injuries.

The Medford crash, which took place on Mystic Valley Parkway at about 6 p.m. July 4, sent five people to the hospital with one driver under arrest for operating under the influence.

Helser Msaravia, 22, of Chelsea was traveling southbound on the parkway when he crossed into the northbound lane and hit another vehicle head-on.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 35-year-old woman and her passenger, a 39year-old man, were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with minor injuries.

Msaravia had minor injuries and two passengers in his car, a 20-year-old female and a 16-year-old minor, suffered serious injuries.

Msaravia’s bail was set at $20,000, and he will be arraigned when he is medically cleared.
