Yanks beat Rays in 11th

-

Aaron Judge hit his second homer of the game leading off the 11th inning, Brett Gardner added a three-run shot and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-4 last night in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Judge connected on the first pitch from Ryne Stanek (0-2) to give him nine career multihomer games. The big slugger also went deep in the first against two-way player Brendan McKay as New York extended its AL East lead over Tampa Bay to a season-high 8½ games.

Aaron Hicks tied it in the eighth with a pinch-hit homer for the Yankees, who used a five-run 10th to beat the Rays 8-4 on Thursday in the opener of a four-game series.

David Hale (2-0) left with two on and one out in the 11th. Aroldis Chapman, who blew a two-run lead in the ninth Thursday, walked Travis d’Arnaud with two outs but got a lineout from Tommy Pham to get his 24th save.

Masahiro Tanaka, who entered 2-0 with an 0.41 ERA in three starts against the Rays this season, was charged with four runs and six hits in 6⅓ innings.

Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia will be honored by Major League Baseball at Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Cleveland.

Sabathia, in the final season of his 19-year career, will be recognized for his contributions to the game and his longtime service to the community. Sabathia began his career with the Indians.

Orioles 4, Blue Jays 1 — Chris Davis homered and had three RBI, Dylan Bundy pitched 6⅔ innings of onerun ball to snap a four-start losing streak and Baltimore beat host Toronto.

Bundy (4-10) delivered a strong performance, allowing three hits and one run with six strikeout and two walks.

Richard Bleier retired three of the four batters he faced and Miguel Castro got Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to fly out with a man at first and two outs in the eighth. Paul Fry finished in the ninth for his second save in three opportunities.

Davis opened the scoring with a two-out drive in the second, his seventh. Davis has 40 career home runs against Toronto, more than any other opponent. He’s gone deep 20 times at Rogers Centre, his highest total at any road ballpark.

With the Orioles up 2-1 in the ninth, Davis gave Baltimore some breathing room with a two-run single off Joe Biagini. It was Davis’ first multi-RBI game since driving in a pair of runs against the Angels on May 10.

Angels 5, Astros 4 — Mike Trout hit his American League-leading 26th homer, and Kole Calhoun, Shohei Ohtani and Andrelton Simmons also went deep to give Los Angeles a win over host Houston.

Calhoun, Ohtani and Simmons all connected off Houston starter Justin Verlander (10-4) as he gave up three home runs for the third time in his last five starts.

The Angels won for the third time in the four games since pitcher Tyler Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room on Monday.

Phillies 7, Mets 2 — Jay Bruce hit a go-ahead single in the ninth inning off closer Edwin Díaz, Mets manager Mickey Callaway lost an early replay challenge that might have cost him late and visiting Philadelphia beat New York.

Nine days after blowing a save in Philadelphia, Díaz (1-6) allowed J.T. Realmuto’s double and Bruce’s RBI single to start the ninth, which snapped a 2-2. The Phillies poured it on after that, batting around and scoring five runs against Díaz, Jeurys Familia and Luis Avilán. Jean Segura drove in two with a double, and Bryce Harper scored him with a two-base hit to cap a rocky day that started with three strikeouts against Mets ace Jacob deGrom.

Philadelphia tied it in the seventh on a close play that Callaway couldn’t challenge. Rhys Hoskins scored on César Hernández’ slow roller toward third, but replays showed catcher Wilson Ramos appeared to tag Hoskins before he touched the plate.

The Mets couldn’t ask for a review, however, because Callaway had unsuccessfully used the club’s challenge in the second inning on Todd Frazier’s stolen base attempt

Earlier in the day it was announced that Phillies outfielder Odúbel Herrera has accepted a suspension for the rest of the season under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy.

The commissioner’s office announced his decision two days after domestic assault charges against Herrera in Atlantic City were dismissed.
