Charlestown charmer a rare find

- By MIRIAM SCHWARTZ

From the moment you step inside 3 Wall St., a tiny side street in the heart of Charlestown, you know you’re in for a treat.

The late-1800s single-family home unfolds skyward, from its lower level with direct access to a magical patio all the way to its roof deck with a view of the Bunker Hill Monument and parts of Boston’s skyline.

Here is a home that’s been lovingly updated while keeping those quirks that make up so much of its charm. Practically speaking, 3 Wall St. is also a bit of a rarity — an opportunity to own a single-family home in a real estate market that’s teeming with condos and triple-decker conversions and avoid soaring HOA fees.

But that’s boring. And this house is anything but.

An earthy tile landing opens to the living room and kitchen area on the home’s main level, decked out with wide pine flooring and exposed original ceiling beams in bright white. The kitchen is updated with modern white cabinetry that complement the overall aesthetic without taking it over, but the star of the space is the spacious deck.

Accessible via Anderson French doors and overlooking the private rear courtyard, the deck serves as a visual and physical extension of the living space, and is sure to become a favorite spot.

Almost unheard of in homes from this period, both bedrooms on the second floor have roomy closets. A footed bathtub with original fittings and pedestal sink outfit the bathroom. On the third level, vaulted ceilings, a generous seating area and a bathroom make up this loftlike master suite. From here, a climb up to the roof deck reveals serene views and plenty of seating space.

The home’s walk-out, finished lower level has infinite potential as a bonus family room or playroom looking out over the private patio area. Shaded by an enormous tree whose rustling leaves provide a calming backdrop, the patio is a little slice of heaven. Add some raised garden beds — the area still gets plenty of sun — and a few strings of twinkly lights and you have the perfect private escape from the city.
