Trio of perfect weekend getaways beckon Bostonians

- By J. Q. LOUISE

Summertime in New England is fleeting, so take advantage of the warm weather and the flexible Fridays and take the family on a little trip before Labor Day. Here are three summer getaways perfect for Bostonians.

Beach – Provincetown

Cape Cod has always been a go-to for Bostonians looking to escape the heat. But how about heading south via the ferry to Provincetown. Only a 90-minute ride, the ferry is a great option for a stress-free long weekend at the beach. Provincetown is home to lots of funky boutique hotels worth checking out. The new AWOL Hotel from the Lark Hotels brand is certainly worth a try. Take in the sunset from their picnic area after a day at the beach and wake up to the classic Lark Hotels breakfast in the morning. And be sure to make time for a bike ride,

P’town is famous for its biking trails; it is really the best way to get around and to take in the scenery.

City – NYC

If you have a craving for a little big city escape, why not hop down to New York City? It’s less than 4 hours away on the Acela and you can skip the TSA lines so no hours of waiting at the airport and the best part is no $100 cab ride into the city from the airport either. Head right into Midtown on Amtrak from downtown Boston. With multiple Acela and Regional Express trains departing from South Station daily, NYC is a great summertime long weekend option for Bostonians. Catch a show on Broadway, enjoy a drink on a trendy rooftop, stroll through Central Park, do a little shopping on Fifth Avenue. The city clears out on weekends in the summer, so you might just be able to escape the crowds and enjoy the city at a little bit of a slower pace as well. In fact, be sure to make time to savor the view at the Lookup, a rooftop in Midtown with an amazing view of the Empire State Building.

Country – Vermont

Looking to really unplug? Head north to Vermont. It’s not just a winter destination, there is lots to do in the summer as well. Head up to Stowe to enjoy hiking, fishing, beer tasting, fine dining and more! The Lodge at Spruce Peak offers lots of summer programming for families and couples. From ziplining to the riding the gondola to playing croquet, there are activities to keep kids and parents occupied. They are even hosting the Spruce Peak Folk Festival Aug. 10 and 11, so head on up if you are a music lover. Enjoy nature, some golf, lots of hiking and lots of amazing views in Stowe this summer. Ski mountains are just out of this world in the summertime.
