Smoak rallies Jays

-

Justin Smoak tied the game with a homer in the ninth inning and knocked in the winning run with a twoout single in the 10th as the Blue Jays beat the Cleveland Indians, 2-1, last night in Toronto.

Smoak got the winning hit off lefty Tyler Olson (1-1), scoring Eric Sogard.

Toronto’s Ken Giles (2-2) pitched one inning and earned the win.

The Indians carried a three-hitter into the ninth before Smoak spoiled the shutout bid, homering with a one-out off closer Brad Hand. Smoak’s 17th homer was his second in two days. He hit a solo shot in Monday’s 7-3 loss to Cleveland.

Indians starter Trevor Bauer allowed three hits in 7⅔ innings, walked three and struck out nine. The right-hander didn’t allow a hit until Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled to start the fifth.

The 3-year-old boy hit by a foul ball in Cleveland last weekend is showing no signs of serious injury, the Indians said.

National League

Mets 5, Padres 2 — Robinson Cano hit three home runs, breaking loose from a season-long slump in a huge way and leading Jason Vargas and host New York over San Diego.

The 36-year-old Cano drove in all five runs and went 4 for 4. Vargas pitched one-hit ball for six shutout innings, possibly enhancing his trade value.

Cardinals 4, Pirates 3 — Paul Goldschmidt homered for the second time in as many nights, José Martínez added his 10th home run this season and Dakota Hudson rebounded from a shaky start to lead visiting St. Louis past Pittsburgh.

Goldschmidt, who hit a goahead grand slam in the 10th inning Monday, delivered a two-run drive to the left-field seats in the third inning off Chris Archer (3-7). Martínez put St. Louis in front with a solo shot leading off the fifth, and Hudson and two relievers shut down the Pirates after spotting Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead.

Nationals 11, Rockies 1 — Trea Turner hit his second career cycle, Stephen Strasburg earned his major league-leading 13th win and host Washington routed Colorado.

Nationals ace Max Scherzer is slated to start tomorrow against Colorado after recovering from inflammation under his right shoulder.

Yonder Alonso was recalled by the Rockies from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Marlins 5, White Sox 1 — Caleb Smith retired his first 17 batters and cruised through seven innings of two-hit ball, and visiting Miami beat Chicago.

Curtis Granderson hit a two-run homer to cap Miami’s four-run fourth inning against Dylan Covey (1-6). Harold Ramirez added a solo shot in the fifth as the NL-worst Marlins ended a four-game skid.

Royals 5, Braves 4 — Lucas Duda came through with visiting Kansas City’s first pinch-hit homer of the season to break a tie in the eighth inning and NL Eastleading Atlanta.

Alex Gordon also homered for the Royals and drove in two runs. Both starters — Atlanta’s Dallas Keuchel and Kansas City’s Danny Duffy — went six strong innings with doubledigit strikeouts but didn’t factor in the decision.

Elsewhere in baseball — Mariners second baseman Dee Gordon was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left quadriceps.

Gordon was placed on the IL yesterday, a day after leaving after the second inning of a win over Texas. Gordon said he strained the muscle rounding first base.

It’s the second time he’s been on the injured list this season after a 19-game stint in May and June with a bruised right wrist.

“This is crazy,” Gordon said. “I’ve got some bad luck or something. I need to do something different in life.”

Gordon is batting .280 with 16 stolen bases.
