Chapman lists home as ‘on the street’

- By JOE DWINELL and STEFAN GELLER

Serial child rapist Wayne Chapman — a Level 3 sex offender who must share where he’s living — has listed his home as “on the street” of Boston in what could be a violation of the law.

The Sex Offender Registry Board site lists Chapman, 71, as “offender is homeless.”

Boston police directed calls about Chapman’s listing Saturday to the department’s sex offender unit. That office was not open.

Chapman’s attorney, Eric Tennen, told the Herald on Friday his client is “old, he’s frail and he needs to be cared for. But for his own safety, we’re not saying where he’s going.” Tennen said once they find a permanent residence for Chapman, he’ll update the listing on the Sex Offender Registry website.

Chapman was set free Friday after being locked up for more than four decades. He got up out of his wheelchair and climbed into the back seat of a Toyota Prius outside Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn after a jury found him not guilty of lewdness.

Chapman has long been a suspect in the unsolved disappearance of 10-year-old Andy Puglisi of Lawrence in the summer of 1976.

Chapman was accused of allegedly exposing himself in front of nurses on June 3, 2018, at MCIShirley state prison and reportedly masturbating the following day. He faced up to three more years in jail, but the jury cleared him. He was being held on $25,000 bail.

The Herald checked out two addresses in Boston’s suburbs Saturday, but Chapman was not seen at either address.

Chapman has 10 days to notify Boston police — or the Sex Offender Registry — of any move. He also must check in with police every 30 days, as all homeless sex offenders living on the streets of Boston must do.

Chapman has admitted to molesting up to 100 boys and once said, according to prison records: “I need help because I cannot help myself from doing these things.”

Two state-appointed examiners said Chapman, who had been held on a civil commitment since he completed his sentence in 2004 for raping two Lawrence boys, could be cleared for release last year. They said he was too old and infirm to commit any more sexual assaults.

The state’s highest court ruled in May that he could not be held indefinitely.

His profile on the Level 3 offender website was updated Friday and lists Chapman’s aliases as Peter Dyneski and Bruce Chapman. New photos were added Friday of Chapman still in his drab prison garb.
