Lions’ Kearse done for year

-

The Detroit Lions have placed wide receiver Jermaine Kearse on injured reserve and signed quarterback Josh Johnson.

Kearse hurt his left leg during Detroit’s first possession of Thursday’s preseason opener against he Patriots, a 31-3 loss. He has played seven seasons and came to Detroit as a free agent this offseason from the New York Jets.

Quarterback Tom Savage was removed from the game at Ford Field when his head hit the turf on a sack. Johnson started three games for Washington last season. He was drafted by Tampa Bay in the fifth round in 2008 out of San Diego and has passed for 1,632 yards in 33 games.

In other moves, the team put defensive tackle Darius Kilgo on injured reserve; signed running back Justin Stockton; activated defensive end Trey Flowers off the physically unable to perform list; and waived cornerback Tarvarus McFadden.

Titans’ Casey is back

The Tennessee Titans eagerly welcomed four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jurrell Casey to training camp, even though he didn’t stick around too long past individual drills.

No need for the Titans’ reigning sack leader to push too hard on his first day back.

“Oh, it felt great, just like I haven’t been out there in over a year,” Casey said yesterday. “I know it’s not been that long, but it definitely feels like it. But to get it back out there and just get back moving around, get a little bit more confidence moving around, it definitely was a good first day.”

The Titans will host joint practice with the Patriots later this week before playing a preseason game Saturday night.

The Titans announced before the 11th practice of camp a handful of roster moves, the biggest that Casey passed his physical after starting on the physically unable to perform list. Fellow defensive lineman DaQuan Jones said it was awesome to have Casey back.

“He’s one of the league’s best D tackles,” Jones said. “To have him back out there having the energy back out there, having his leadership back out there means a lot to the team.”

A Pro Bowl lineman each of the past four seasons, Casey was placed on injured reserve after hurting a knee Dec. 22 in the fourth quarter of a 25-16 win over Washington. He led the Titans with seven sacks and a careerhigh 50 quarterback pressures last season in his first year of coordinator Dean Pees’ defense. Casey also ranks eighth in franchise history with 46 career sacks.

Bad news for Jags

The Jacksonville Jaguars don’t expect left tackle Cam Robinson and receiver Marqise Lee to be ready for the season opener.

Coach Doug Marrone said yesterday “we just can’t get them over the hump.”

“We’ve got to go and start preparing to play without them, unfortunately,” Marrone added. “It could change, obviously, but it’d be tough.”

Robinson, a second-round draft pick in 2017, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last September — during a Week 2 win against the Pats. Lee, who the team in receptions in 2017, tore several ligaments in his left knee when Atlanta cornerback Damontae Kazee delivered a helmet first hit to his knee in a preseason game last August.

Neither has practiced in training camp, and both remain on the physically unable to perform list.

Robinson’s absence is seemingly more problematic considering the Jaguars have few viable options behind him. Josh Wells is expected to move into the starting spot, but he’s missed more games (41) than he’s played in (39) during five seasons. Cedric Ogbuehi, a first-round draft pick by Cincinnati in 2015, also could get a shot.

Sudfeld returns

Eagles’ backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld was back at practice wearing an arm sling, one day after surgery to repair a broken left wrist.

Two other players joined him on the Philadelphia sideline.

Two-time Pro Bowl right tackle Lane Johnson and second-year tight end Dallas Goedert are listed as weekto-week with injuries that aren’t expected to force them to miss the season opener. Johnson has a knee injury and Goedert hurt his calf.

Goedert was one of a few key players who played in a 27-10 loss to Tennessee on Thursday night.

He’s expected to see plenty of action with Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz in certain formations.
