Tucker, Terriers shut out Wildcats

-

Boston University grad student Sam Tucker was the story of the night, turning aside 32 University of New Hampshire shots to post his fourth career shutout and first in a Terriers uniform in a 3-0 win at Agganis Arena last night.

Tucker’s three previous shutouts came during his early career at Yale University in the ECAC.

BU’s defense aided the cause with double-digit blocks in one of its best early season showings. UNH entered the game with the fourth-ranked offense in the country.

UNH outshot BU, 32-25, but couldn’t manage to solve Tucker.

BU Senior captain Patrick Curry sparked the offense with a pair of goals, including an empty-netter late in the third at 18:10. Freshman wing Robert Mastrosimone had the other Terriers tally. JOHN CONNOLLY

Organizers of the PGA Tour’s first tournament in Japan took the unusual step of closing the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club course to spectators for Saturday’s second round over safety concerns.

Torrential rain washed out play on Friday causing the second round to be moved to Saturday after the course took on more than eight inches (20 centimeters) of rain. Flooding and mudslides in towns in the surrounding area left at least nine people dead, expanding damage in areas still recovering from recent typhoons.

The event is set to conclude on Monday in order to complete 72 holes.

Local favorite Hideki Matsuyama and Keegan Bradley were tied for third at 8 under. Bradley shot a 63 that included eight birdies against a lone bogey while Matsuyama shot 67 . ...

Hamlin wins pole

Denny Hamlin won the pole at Martinsville Speedway, where the five-time winner will attempt to lock himself into NASCAR’s championship race.

Hamlin turned a lap at 97.840 mph in his Toyota from Joe Gibbs Racing to earn the top starting spot in today’s playoff race. It is the opening event of the round of eight and the field will be whittled over the next three races to the four drivers who will compete for the championship.

Hamlin is making a strong push for his first career title with five wins this season, including the Daytona 500 and last week at Kansas. The

Virginia driver once dominated the paper-clip shaped short track but last won at Martinsville in 2015. Hamlin was second in this race a year ago, fifth in the spring.

Chase Elliott qualified second but will forfeit that position at the start of the race as punishment for an engine change.

He will drop to the back of the field, but his strong qualifying effort still gave him a very good pit stall that should ease his Chevrolet’s battle from the back.

Martin Truex Jr., Hamlin’s teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing, qualified third and was followed by four Ford drivers, with Ryan Blaney at sixth the highest of the title contenders.

Kyle Larson qualified 14th, a spot behind points leader

Kyle Busch, and confirmed he’s been racing with a fractured rib suffered in a crash at Talladega Superspeedway two weeks ago.

Kevin Harvick was the lowest qualifying playoff driver at 22nd.
