Gov: Dems risk melting down, setting up a Trump re-election

- By SEAN PHILIP COTTER

The Democrats’ left wing won’t be able to keep itself from dragging the party into an “ugly” contested convention this summer, paving the way for a Trump victory, predicted Gov. Christopher Sununu of New Hampshire, where the crucial first-in-the-nation primary looms.

“You think they’re politically fighting right now? Wait till the Democrat convention comes,” Sununu told the Herald’s editorial board on Tuesday. “It’ll be ugly — and like WWE.”

The Republican governor said he expects the Democrats’ strident and uncompromising progressives will “take their ball and go home” if relative moderate former Vice President Joe Biden, the current national front-runner, is tapped as nominee at the midsummer party convention in Milwaukee and resists their hard-left agenda.

“Biden will go in with more delegates,” Sununu predicted. “Then they will all decide they have to gang up against him. They will have to pick a winner, and that could be someone that’s running — but, by the way, that could be someone we haven’t even heard of yet.”

“They’re going to put up such a fight to get some of these ultra-socialist ideals into the party platform, and to get him to buy off on that,” Sununu said. “And if they don’t, and if Biden does come out as the winner — and I think he has the best chance to do that — you’re going to see a lot of those ultra-progressives say, ‘Well I’m not voting for him. If it’s not my candidate, I’m not with you.’ Because that’s the mentality of that party right now.”

The governor continued, “It’s possible you see an old-school bloody floor battle on the floor of the Democrat convention, and Trump is going to be smiling the whole time. … Will the party heal itself in three months before November? No. Trump wins.”

Sununu predicted Biden would win the Granite State in New Hampshire’s firstin-the-nation primary Feb. 11. Biden is leading in New Hampshire, followed by Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. The race has been tight, but a Franklin Pierce University-Boston Herald-NBC10 Boston poll released Monday showed Biden, at 26%, up four over Sanders and eight over Warren, with the rest of the still-large field trailing.

Sununu predicted that Trump will win in New Hampshire in November, a state the Republican president narrowly lost in 2016. That will happen, the first-term governor predicted, because of the current strong economy and the Dems’ leftward march.
