From election to arrest
Lowell state Rep. David Nangle was arrested Tuesday morning on several federal charges for misconduct and allegedly using campaign funds for personal expenses, running up a massive debt in gambling losses, according to a federal indictment.
The following is a timeline of Nangle’s alleged illicit activities following his election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1999 to represent the 17th Middlesex District.
The following events are according to the federal indictment filed in district court on Feb. 13:
■ As early as 2011, Nangle borrowed more than a total of $100,000 over several years from various local business owners, which he did not pay back in full
■ In 2014, Nangle started to “devise a scheme” to defraud the Office of Campaign Finance, the Nangle Committee and Lowell Bank
■ From 2014-19, Nangle used the Nangle Committee bank debit card to file false campaign disclosures for gambling and other personal expenses
■ Beginning in 2014, Nangle hid his debts from the State Ethics Commission by omitting them from annual filings
■ From 2014-18, Nangle filed false income tax returns and claimed tens of thousands of dollars in deductions
■ In January 2015, Nangle applied for a home mortgage loan with Lowell Bank, which included false statements and omissions
■ In 2017, the IRS notified Nangle that he owed additional taxes and penalties of $7,000 for his 2014 tax filings
■ In December 2017, Nangle embezzled $1,500 in Nangle Committee funds using a vendor that did not actually provide campaign services
■ Nangle was arrested on Tuesday morning and pleaded not guilty to all counts
