- BY SEAN PHILIP COTTER

A Weymouth Public Schools employee who just returned from a trip abroad with a fever is now under self-quarantine as authorities monitor the person for coronavirus.

A staffer told the district around noon Friday about the fever after coming back from a trip last week, Weymouth Public Schools Superintendent Jennifer Curtis-Whipple said in a statement. That prompted the the district to report the matter to health officials for monitoring as the virus spreads.

The state has instructed more than 600 people who have traveled abroad go into “self-isolation” quarantine, staying at home for two weeks. One person in Massachusetts has been confirmed to have the virus that’s killed thousands, mostly in China, but the local case is recovering.

Curtis-Whipple said,

“The district has been told by health officials that they have not received any new confirmed or potential cases of the Coronavirus in the state. The district will continue to collaborate with local and state health officials and will follow all DPH and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention policies and procedures.”

The statement didn’t provide information about what the district employee’s job is, who he or she is or where he or she went, other than to say that the place where the person traveled is not a country that currently has any travel restrictions around the coronavirus.

She said that state officials told the district to follow its normal protocols for employees who are sick.

“The employee will be welcomed back to work once the employee is feeling better,” Curtis-Whipple said.
