Hopkinton gets the jump on SL

CANTON — After rolling through the Division 3 South bracket virtually unchalleng­ed a year ago, the Hopkinton boys hockey team has already had to sweat a little in the first game of its title defense.

The top-seeded Hillers (20-1) establishe­d a fourgoal lead in the second period Friday night against No. 17 Silver Lake but had to hold on as penalties piled up, advancing to the quarterfin­als with a 5-3 victory.

Senior captain Kyle Rogers, the Tri-Valley League MVP, led the way for the Hillers, who next face No. 9 Bishop Stang at the Canton Ice House on Sunday.

Rogers and lethal linemates Sean Walsh and Tommy Hamblet got things going for Hopkinton with two goals just 22 seconds apart late in the first period, shoveling in a backhand from in front and picking his spot from the slot, staking the Hillers to a 2-0 lead.

In the second Tyler Mason pulled the Lakers within 2-1 on a 5-on-3 power play and with plenty of time remaining for the 5-on-4, but junior defenseman Ronnie Shamus stunned Silver Lake with a short-handed strike from the right circle for his first goal.

Aaron Zenus, Shawn Callahan and Peyton DeFeo all scored, while Tucker Hanson made 42 stops as No. 1 Masconomet (18-3-1) edged No. 9 Boston Latin, 3-2, in a Div. 2 North quarterfin­al . ... Tyler Godfrey, Cael Kohan and Bradford Killion tallied asNo.5 Triton (16-4-2) edged No. 13 Wilmington, 3-2. … Jacob Noyes scored in overtime as No. 2 Lincoln-Sudbury (18-3-2) rallied to defeat No. 7 Gloucester, 6-5.

Boys Basketball

Jack Rodriguez sounded off for 23 points, while Jarnell Guzman piled up 20 points, eight assists and seven rebounds to propel No. 2 Lynn English (20-2) to a 93-63 win over No. 7 Lawrence in a Div. 1 North quarterfin­al . … Khai Smith posted another double-double with 17 points and 21 rebounds as No. 5 Cambridge (18-4) handled fourth-seeded Everett, 65-52. … Nate Siow scored 19 points in the first half as topseeded Lowell (21-0) defeated No.8 Central Catholic, 64-51.

Matt Boen scored 23 points as No. 1 Mansfield (20-3) held off Attleboro, 5452, in a Div. 1 South quarterfin­al.

Girls Basketball

With a game-high 29 points, Ali Brigham set the all-time scoring mark for top-seeded Franklin (22-0) with 1,632 points as part of an 85-37 win over No. 8 Framingham in a Div. 1 Central quarterfin­al matchup.

Sophomore Cameron Fauria and senior Kaitlyn Rapose combined for 27 points, leading No. 5 Bishop Feehan (17-5) to a 55-43 win over No. 4 Newton South ,ina Div. 1 South quarterfin­al.

In a Div. 2 South quarterfin­al, Katelyn Mollica dropped 20 points while Lizzy Davis picked up 14 for No. 2 Foxboro (21-2) in a 5643 win over No. 7 Pembroke.
