BU advances to Patriot final

Terriers able to hold off Bucknell

Max Mahoney scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Walter Whyte added 16 and 10 and thirdseede­d Boston University beat seventh-seeded Bucknell 64-61 in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament on Sunday.

Avi Toomer scored inside with 43 seconds left to pull the Bison within three. Javante McCoy missed a 3 for the Terriers late in the shot clock and Toomer came up empty on a tying 3 with five seconds left.

Mahoney missed the front end of a one-and-one but a fullcourt heave was well short for the Bison, who knocked off No. 2 seed American in the quarterfin­als.

The Terriers (20-13) travel to face league champion Colgate on Wednesday for an NCAA berth. BU last made the conference final in 2013 and won its last title in 2011.

Toomer scored a careerhigh 23 points in his last game for the Bison (14-20) and Jimmy Sotos added 10.

Colgate 89, Lafayette 64 — Jordan Burns scored 17 points and Will Rayman had a double-double and topseeded Colgate ran away from No. 5 seed Lafayette in a Patriot League Tournament semifinal game..

Colgate (24-8) will host No. 3 seed Boston University on Wednesday for a berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Rayman finished 7-of-11 shooting for 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jack Ferguson scored 13 points off the bench, Rapolas Ivanauskas 12, Nelly Cummings 11 and Keegan Records 10 off the bench.

No. 9 Maryland 83, No. 25 Michigan 70 — Anthony Cowan Jr. had 20 points and eight assists in his final home game at Maryland, and the ninth-ranked Terrapins beat No. 25 Michigan to earn a share of the Big Ten regular-season title.

Eric Ayala scored 19, Jalen Smith had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Aaron Wiggins added 15 points for the Terps (24-7, 14-6). Cowan, a senior guard, went 7 for 11 from the floor and hit six free throws in the final minute.

No. 16 Michigan State 80, No. 19 Ohio State 69 — Cassius Winston scored 27 points and No. 16 Michigan State beat No. 19 Ohio State to win a third straight Big Ten championsh­ip.

The Spartans (22-9, 14-6 Big Ten) shared the conference title with No. 9 Maryland and No. 24 Wisconsin and they will be the secondseed­ed team at the Big Ten Tournament behind the Badgers.

No. 21 Houston 64, Memphis 57 — Fabian White Jr. had 18 points and 14 rebounds, Quentin Grimes added 17 points and No. 21 Houston defeated Memphis.

Grimes had 15 second-half points, which led a big run for the Cougars (23-8, 13-5 American Athletic Conference). Nate Hinton had 13 points for Houston, which shot 34%, including 48% in the second half.
