Officials vote on golf, track, tennis, rugby
The Tournament Management Committee put the finishing touches on spring tournament proposals for the MIAA Board of Directors in the event schools do officially return to session on May 4.
After getting positive feedback from committee members regarding last week’s proposal — which concentrated heavily on a 12-game regular season, followed by a sectional tournament as opposed to an elongated state tournament format — the TMC dealt with the sports of golf, track, tennis and rugby.
They voted unanimously that the golf regular season would end on June 11, giving them four weeks of play provided schools do open on May 4. If that holds true, it would allow for a sectional golf tournament to be held on June 15-16 with no state championship.
For track, the TMC heard some feedback from Brookline athletic director Peter Rittenburg, who sits on the Track and Field Committee. They agreed with his thoughts of setting a June 21 cutoff date, then holding sectional meets on June 27-28.
MIAA tennis liaison Carolyn Bohmiller said the tennis committee was on board with the recommendation of focusing on a team tournament and bypassing individual tennis championships.
For rugby, MIAA liaison Phil Napolitano said there was support for having one match per week as recommended by the sports medicine committee, which would allow them to hold finals on the weekend of June 27-28.
There was discussion regarding what would happen if schools do not return on May 4 as Gov. Charlie Baker had mandated March 25. Several committee members, namely Lowell athletic director Dave Lezenski, Bridgewater-Raynham
AD Dan Buron, Wahconah AD Jared Shannon and Wellesley AD John Brown, felt there was no need to have a date in place today, preferring to wait until the next TMC meeting on April 16.
These proposals, along with the ones the TMC agreed upon last week, will be on the agenda at the next Board Meeting on Thursday.
