Strap in for another weather rollercoaster
Brief warmup gives way to more chill
Hey, at least it’s not going to snow.
In fact, it’ll warm up into the 70s later this week, offering Boston a brief respite from this seemingly neverending epilogue of winter. But that’ll only give way to more cooler weather for the weekend and into early next week.
Strap in: the temperature rollercoaster ride is about to alternate false dashes of spring with rain-laden splashes of a more early April-like reality.
On Friday, temperatures should rise into the low 70s in Boston, potentially bringing in the area’s warmest weather in a couple weeks. But the relative warmth will be accompanied by clouds and showers, and a cold front will zap away Friday’s mild weather by the weekend. Stronger storms could also be part of the weather picture on Friday afternoon and evening, with damaging winds a possibility.
Behind Friday’s front, temperatures will tumble back into the low 60s for highs on both Saturday and Sunday. While sunshine should rule the skies both days this weekend, nighttime temperatures will plummet down into the 40s again. That’ll drag temperatures — once again — back below average, continuing this spring’s chilly theme.
Another storm early next week will probably drop temperatures even lower for Monday and Tuesday, and the bright blue skies of the weekend will evaporate as well. Monday and Tuesday look wet, with highs only rising into the 50s both days. For context, Boston’s average high is in the mid-60s in mid-May, meaning temperatures will generally be running about 5-10 degrees below average following Friday’s brief warmup.
Through Tuesday, temperatures were running about three degrees below average so far this month, following an exceptionally chilly April.
Earlier this week, it looked as if a prolonged period of warmer weather might finally set hold across the region. But, backdoor cold fronts and relentless storm systems are keeping New England generally grey and cool, and in some cases, even a bit snowy.
It’s seemed that any hint of spring-like weather has been almost instantaneously followed by a cooler snap. The upcoming forecast looks to continue that rather unfortunate trend.
