Wilmington’s DuCharme picks Bentley

The Hockomock League principals and athletic directors announced their Class of 2020 Scholar/Athletes award winners.

HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK

The award, in existence for 30 years, represents the top studentath­letes in the Hockomock League based on academics, athletic participat­ion, sportsmans­hip, leadership, and citizenshi­p. They have all successful­ly balanced a demanding academic schedule along with participat­ion in athletics as well as many other extra-curricular activities during their high school career.

The recipients are: Jacqueline Lynch-Bartek and Nicholas McMahon (Attleboro), Caroline Tourgee and Nathan Quan (Canton), Jaime Notarangel­o and Ryan Proulx (Foxboro), Sarah Spanek and Rohan Herur (Franklin); Samantha Robison and Jack Cannon (King Philip), Eliz Healy and Peter Oldow (Mansfield), Annie Flanagan and Maxwell Manor (Milford), Abigail Gallagher and Owen Harding (North Attleboro), Allison Kemp and Sam Stevens (Oliver Ames), Eliana Boxerman and Cameron Baker (Sharon), Emma McSweeney and Joshua McNamara (Stoughton), Kamryn Li and Nolan Melo (Taunton).

Duran Brown-bound

Two-time Boston Herald AllScholas­tic girls soccer standout Kayla Duran has transferre­d to Brown from Boston College.

The former BB&N star started in all 20 games as a freshman at BC in 2018, scoring a goal and adding an assist. She missed the 2019 season with an injury.

“I chose Brown because I was really drawn to the opportunit­ies for excellence that Brown has to offer, both academical­ly and athletical­ly,” Duran said. “I am excited about exploring Brown’s open curriculum and the opportunit­y to join a successful soccer program.”

McKinnon wins scholarshi­p

Methuen senior Grace McKinnon was one of 10 recipients of the PGA WORKS Golf Management University Scholarshi­p Program for the 2020-2021 academic school year. These $8,000 scholarshi­ps are designed to improve the recruitmen­t and retention of talented and motivated students from diverse background­s, who are pursuing PGA Membership through PGA Golf Management University Programs nationwide.

The PGA WORKS initiative is designed to evolve the demographi­c compositio­n of the golf industry’s workforce and the PGA of America’s Membership. Scholarshi­p recipients will pursue full time undergradu­ate studies at one of the 18 accredited PGA Golf Management Universiti­es during the 2020-2021 academic year, with an ultimate goal of obtaining PGA Membership.

McKinnon will attend Florida Gulf Coast University in the fall.

DuCharme picks Bentley

Boston Herald All-Scholastic girls basketball standout Kylie DuCharme of Wilmington has given a verbal commitment to attend Bentley in the fall of 2021.

A two-time Middlesex League All-Star as well as the Middlesex Freedom co-MVP, the junior forward averaged 18.3 points, 18.4 rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocked shots a game in leading the Wildcats to a 17-6 season and a berth in the Div. 2 North sectional semifinals.

Hoop coaches hired

Ashland hired Mike Normant as its boys basketball coach. Normant comes to Ashland from LincolnSud­bury where he spent the past five seasons. In his time there, the Warriors were 43-58, which included an appearance in the 2018 MIAA Div. 1 Central quarterfin­als.

Normant has experience coaching in the Tri-Valley League. He was the JV coach, assistant varsity coach as well as associate head coach at Westwood. In his final two years on the varsity staff, the Wolverines were 41-4.

Off the court, Normant is a social studies teacher at Brookline High School.

Further south, Old Rochester named Rick Regan as its new girls basketball coach. He replaces legendary Bob Hohne, who won 652 games in 42 years at the school.

Pioneer Charter School of Science in Saugus has applied for an MIAA membership beginning in the fall of 2020. The MIAA Board of Directors will review their applicatio­n and it could be voted on at the next meeting which is scheduled for July 21. … Former Boston Herald All-Scholastic boys lacrosse standout Marc O’Rourke of Hingham was one of three selected as Bryant’s Male Athlete of the Year. … The Massachuse­tts Baseball Coaches Associatio­n (MBCA) has been offering free Zoom clinics to all MBCA members. Those coaches interested in joining the associatio­n can do so at massbca.com.
