Dot man dead after Hyde Park shooting
A Dorchester man has died after he and a woman were shot Tuesday evening at Francis D. Martini Memorial Shell Park in Hyde Park, Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins announced.
Israel Mayhew, 26, was identified by the DA’s office as one of the victims in the shooting, which occurred around 9:40 p.m. The woman is expected to survive, the DA’s office said Wednesday. Boston Police Commissioner William Gross said Tuesday evening the woman is in her early 20s.
According to photos from the scene, the shooting occurred near basketball courts at the park. Gross said one victim was in the park and another was on a roadway.
Rollins in a statement Wednesday said her office is working with State Police and Boston Police and the investigation is in its “earliest stages,” with no further information available.
“The scourge of gun violence has claimed too many lives in Suffolk County,” Rollins said. “My Office is working diligently with our law enforcement and community partners to bring answers and accountability to the victims, their families, and our community.”
At the scene Tuesday evening, Rollins said officials are working hard to ensure individuals with firearms would be held accountable “with respect to rapid indictments.”
Officials said State Police are taking the lead on the investigation because it occurred on state property. The Martini Shell Park is part of the Neponset River reservation operated by
DCR.
Police are seeking information about what happened and ask any witnesses to contact State Police detectives at 617-727-8817.
