Charlestown charmer

- By miriam Schwartz

Charlestown’s Gaslight District has this enchanting quality to it. It’s the rich history that touches nearly every building, the warmth from the gas lamps that give the area its name, and the diverse local businesses that make this corner of Charlestown feel so cozy.

Atop the property at 121 Main St., a brick building that has stood for more than 200 years, sits Unit 3, a twobedroom, two-bathroom penthouse, on the market for $1,050,000.

For all their charm, Charlestown listings for historic homes rarely include the words “spacious,” “deeded off-street parking,” or “tons of storage space throughout” but the penthouse has, in fact, all three of these.

Starting with an impressive open concept kitchen (which has a fireplace), dining, and extra-wide living space, the home’s main floor is entirely unique.

Flanked by two fireplaces and surrounded by windows, the living and dining space have a loft-like aesthetic with exposed beams original to the home. For Boston-area house hunters looking for a home with character and personality, this is it, without sacrificing practicality. To that, the penthouse’s kitchen boasts generous cabinet space and a breakfast bar.

Vaulted ceilings with raised beams, a skylight, and rustic brick wall grace the master bedroom which occupies the penthouse’s second level exclusively, complete with its own seating area and bathroom. A second, smaller bedroom on the main level can also double as a home office.

Proximity and ease of access are other key perks to 121 Main St. It’s a 10-minute walk to the T, and steps from Whole Foods and local restaurants. Walking to the North End is a breeze, too.

The sale of the penthouse is being handled by David Cody with Orchard Park Realty, 617-538-1150.
