Mild, dry start to work week
June ushers in May-like weather
If you’re looking for more spring-like cooler weather after much of last week’s muggy, summer-like heat, it looks like it’ll lean more on the cooler side of things around the Boston area, at least a little while.
As May transitions to June, temperatures will take on more of a May-like feel as the calendar flips, though we suspect most of you won’t be complaining about the upcoming weather pattern.
After temperatures rose into the 80s on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, cooler and drier air settles back in for the start of the work week. Temperatures, though, will slowly begin to build back up later this week, and it generally looks unsettled for both Wednesday and Thursday before a drier end to the work week and into next weekend.
Today looks like an allaround winner, with a sunsplashed high temperature of 70 degrees. Behind Saturday’s cold front, high pressure moving in from the north and west will usher in a much more comfortable air mass, mainly continuing Sunday’s pleasant weather.
Get that esplanade stroll in earlier this week, though: after another generally sunny and mild Tuesday, chances off showers will work their way back into the picture by Tuesday night. Those will last into Wednesday, as a slow-moving area of low pressure moves in from the north and west. Cloudier and unsettled weather will likely last into Thursday, before a drier first Friday of June.
Going back to May for a second, though, Boston looks to finish the month a bit cooler and drier than average. Through Thursday, temperatures at Boston’s official climate observation site at Logan Airport were running about two degrees below average, and the city was also about an inch below average on monthly precipitation.
Assuming Boston’s colder than average May holds, it’d mark the second consecutive cooler than average month, following April’s remarkable chill. So far this year collectively, though, Boston’s temperatures are still running about three degrees above average, thanks to an exceptionally mild middle and end part of the winter season in January, February and March.
Though June looks to start on a cooler note, it won’t be too far below our average high in the low 70s for the early part of the month. Next week may be trending warmer and drier, so if you’re looking for more of that summerlike feel, it’s probably not too far off in the distance.
And while June starts off relatively chilly, we’re rapidly approaching the time of year when cooler than average weather is welcomed rather than cursed.
