MiAA doUBles field hockey divisions
The MIAA Field Hockey Committee wasted little time in announcing its intentions for the 2021-22 season.
Following the parameters set forth by the Tournament Management Committee, the Field Hockey committee voted 13-0 in favor of going to four divisions. The next step in the process will be to the TMC for its approval.
The current field hockey format calls for two divisions, but the committee was unanimous in its belief that four divisions was preferred. Several members polled schools within their respective districts and they shared those same sentiments.
If the 2020-21 season does take place, there was some talk over whether officials would be required to wear masks. If they’re required to do so, it could present issues for a sport that has plenty of whistles, something not as easy to do through a mask.
Preliminary talks proposed some officials use an electronic whistle. Some wondered who would incur the cost, while others were quick to point out they generally run in the vicinity of $20 each.
It wouldn’t be a field hockey meeting unless the topic of boys participation came up.
Marlboro School Committee member Katherine Hennessy presented some facts regarding boys playing field hockey.
The gist of her discussion centered around growing the game without gender conflicts at the younger levels. That would go a long way to implementing a boys league down the road.
Adding another sport could be a financial issue, due to the pandemic affecting budgets. Beverly Public Schools Superintendent Susan Charochak alluded to that and pointed out that field availability could be a concern.
The committee is scheduled to meet again in September, though they allowed for the possibility that an August meeting might be more prudent if something happens over the next six weeks that could alter the fall season.
