Dad’s Day packages crafted

- by Olivia Vanni

Father’s Day is just on the horizon and this year, the coronavirus pandemic has made it a little more complicated for us to celebrate our dads on their special day.

Thankfully, backyard barbecues have great social-distancing potential, and a number of local restaurants are trying to take at least a sliver of stress out of the situation by offering to-go kits for creating a COVIDfriendly barbecue for dad right outside your own home.

The Smoke Shop BBQ: Hand your padre an icecold beer and take over grill duty, cooking up a selection of meats from The Smoke Shop BBQ. This spot has put together the “Ultimate Father’s Day Grilling Kit”, which comes with a dozen chicken wings that are already smoked and ready to be drenched with agave and spices, as well as a couple of 10 oz. Prime Strip Steaks that are dusted with beef and pork rub that are all ready to hit the flames. To make the meal a real winner, there’s also a bottle of the Smoke Shop’s Sweet Victory BBQ sauce, asparagus and potato salad for sides, and Strawberry Rhubarb Almond Crisp for dessert. In the event that your dad didn’t pass along his grilling wisdom, you’ll also have access to a video filled with cooking tips from Pitmaster Andy Husbands to ensure you can do a flawless prep. You must preorder these kits online by Wednesday to be able to pick them up from the restaurant’s Seaport, Cambridge and Somerville locations on Saturday or Sunday.

Sweet Cheeks Q

If your family is anything like ours, no barbecue is ever complete unless there’s smoke. Sweet Cheeks Q will have us covered with a couple of Father’s Day packages, including its Texas Smokehouse bundle. With enough meat to feed five to eight people, this offering includes giant smoked beef short ribs, a rack of dry rub St. Louis pork ribs and smoked pulled chicken. And if you’re looking for a nonsmoking selection, there’s also the Grill Kit, which includes marinated hanger steak tips, a dozen honeygarlic-marinated chicken wings, Black Angus Burgers and Bratwurst with “all the fixin’s”. Each package also comes with sides, like biscuits, grilled corn and peach salad, Church Basement Potato Salad, Pimento Mac n’ Cheese and BBQ Ranch Beans, as well as sauces. Preorders must be made by Friday. To find more details, like pricing and pickup specs, head to Sweet Cheeks’ Curbside site.

Saltie Girl:

Your father may be more fond of surf rather than turf, and luckily, Saltie Girl will be slinging seafood this weekend. The Back Bay spot will be offering a couple of takeout specials designed with dads in mind. For guys who eat meat, there’ll be a Berkshire double Bone-In Pork Chop with Chanterelle mushrooms, spring onions and quince puree. But staying true to its sealegs, Saltie Girl is also providing a clambake to-go, complete with twin 1N-lb. lobsters, 1 lb. of steamers, clam chowder, corn on the cob, steamed potatoes and drawn butter. Preorders need to be in by Friday for Sunday pick up. Season to Go:

And for folks who want to mix and match their backyard cooking options, Season to Go has launched a line of Father’s Day Meal Kits that you can customize with à la carte items. The Cambridge-based business has a whole selection of grill-ready specialities — from appetizers and sides like shuck-your-own oysters and heirloom Boston baked beans, to entrées and desserts like Aleppo pepperrubbed swordfish with charred tomato jam and a “Take & Bake” deep dish chocolate chip cookie with ice cream. To see the full menu and order by Wednesday’s deadline, head to the Season to Go site.
