Hub police confiscate large stash of fireworks

- By MARIE SZANISZLO

Police issued two people city ordinance violations late Friday after confiscating a large quantity of illegal fireworks from a car in South Boston.

Officers responding to complaints about excessive fireworks displays shortly after 10 p.m. in the area of Crowley Rodgers Way saw and heard multiple fireworks being set off from a parking lot, police said.

Officers approached and saw smoke from freshly ignited fireworks and two people standing behind a gray Honda Accord with an open trunk containing a “significant” amount of fireworks, police said.

Officers spoke with a woman who became “instantly confrontational” with officers who had begun to remove the illegal fireworks from the trunk, police said.

A man at the rear of the vehicle also became “increasingly agitated and confrontational,” police said. “The male and female suspects continued their verbal tirade, berating officers with multiple racial slurs as officers confiscated the fireworks.”

Both were issued city ordinance violations for possession of fireworks, police said, and all of the fireworks were transported to the District C-6 Station in South Boston.

Boston Police reminded the public that illegal fireworks pose “significant dangers to the safety of our residents and their property and do not belong in our communities.”

State law clearly states that it is illegal for private citizens to use, possess or sell fireworks in Massachusetts, police said. It is also illegal to purchase them legally elsewhere and then transport them into Massachusetts.

Police urged anyone who sees or hears fireworks in their neighborhood to immediately call 911 or, to remain anonymous, to call the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1-800-494-TIPS or to text the word “TIP” to CRIME 27463.
