a tastE of old nEw England

- By MIRIAM SCHWARTZ

There are a few days of “real” summer left and we will give up on homes on the Cape when they’re snatched out of our cold, mittened hands.

To wit, a small piece of paradise in East Sandwich, not far from Cape Cod Bay, at 6 Spring Hill Road.

If you’re not familiar with the term Cottagecore, it’s a veneration of the “cottage” aesthetic. Think babbling brooks, lush gardens, a roaring fire, and simpler times. Built in 1984, the historic “mill house” has been expertly renovated to maintain the inherent character and history in the New England antique home.

Located in the Spring Hill Historic District, which was named for its abundance of freshwater springs, the home sits on a private, spring-fed pond and features a fernlined waterfall and spillway right out of a postcard.

With three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and close to 2,100 square feet, the home is substantial and warm, with enough gravitas to match its history, but also an easy comfort that commands putting your feet up and curling up with a book. Among its most transporting features, the home’s great room is wrapped in wood paneled walls and floors and enjoys a brick and slate fireplace, topped with a beamed ceiling.

An adorable, eat-in farmhouse kitchen gives way to an open dining area and then the living space, lit by generous windows overlooking the sumptuous grounds. The upstairs bedrooms, two good-sized sleeping quarters and a smaller office, are simple, drawing on some of the same paneling as the first floor.

As part of a larger property owned by the late Boston journalist Tom Ellis and his widow, Arlene Ellis, the home’s main attraction is just outside — a pergolacovered deck from which to admire your surroundings and a dock that looks out over the peaceful pond.
