Trump impeachment ‘the right thing’

Rep. Lynch has no reservations about move

Democrats in Congress are preparing to “do the right thing” and impeach President Trump for a second time after a riotous mob of supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol last Wednesday, said U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch Sunday.

“You would think that the Senate, after having had the president direct a mob attack against the Capitol — against the House and Senate, putting them all in peril — that they would be receptive to at least debating and discussing the merits of impeachment against this president,” Lynch said during a live appearance on WCVB’s “On the Record.”

House leaders expect to introduce articles of impeachment today, with a vote likely later in the week.

The White House on Friday called the articles of impeachment “politically motivated” but bipartisan support to remove the president from office is growing as disturbing videos of Trump supporters smashing windows and doors and vandalizing the halls of Congress continue to emerge. The attempted insurrection happened as federal lawmakers were in session to certify the results of the 2020 general election.

U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern — who was in the Capitol during last week’s siege — shared a video of a rioter looking over at the open U.S. Senate floor before following a police officer away from the Senate.

“This is chilling — were it not for this officer’s quick thinking to lure the attackers away from an unguarded door, we may have been moments away from livestreamed assassinations on the United States Senate floor,” McGovern tweeted.

Trump has repeatedly made baseless claims of widespread voter fraud and until last Thursday, had refused to commit to a peaceful transition of power to President-elect Joe Biden’s administration.

“For us to impeach, I think, is the right thing to do. I don’t think there’s ever a wrong time to do the right thing,” Lynch said.

Every member of the Massachusetts delegation favors Trump’s removal.

During an appearance on CNN on Sunday, U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton said “Donald Trump is a terrible person who doesn’t care about others, doesn’t care about our country, doesn’t care about our Constitution.”

“We need to send a message not just to Trump and his acolytes, but to future generations of America. To every future president and to freedom-loving people around the world who are looking at how our democracy responds to this attack on our very selves,” Moulton said on CNN on Sunday.

A handful of Republican representatives and two senators — Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., have said they will join Democrats in their efforts to remove Trump.
