Belmont, Winchester battle to draw

- By BRIAN ROACH

BELMONT — In an evenly played Middlesex League contest, Belmont and Winchester took it to the final whistle at Skip Viglirolo Rink on Wednesday night.

The two times that Belmont took a lead, Winchester answered with a tally of its own as both teams skated to a 2-2 draw and are just upbeat to take the ice against another team — even if it means adjusting to a new set of rules.

“The big thing is we are getting to play right now,” said Marauders coach Ken Murphy. “Unfortunately,

two halves is a part of getting to play right now. We make the adjustment and we move forward.”

After a scoreless first half that saw the shots on goal (7-6) in favor of Belmont (2-0-1), neither team gave the other a chance until the final 15 minutes of play.

The Marauders got on the board first as senior Emma O’Donovan scored off assists from senior Samantha Rocci and sophomore Lilly Duffy to make it 1-0 at the 7:22 mark of the second.

Winchester (0-1) responded with a tally off the stick of sophomore Annie Ettenhoffer with assists for senior Amanda O’Brien and sophomore Alexandria Dente just 1:08 later to tie it up 1-1.

With 8:25 remaining, Belmont got a goal from junior Molly Dacey that ricocheted between the Winchester goalie’s legs and into the back of the net.

Winchester once again scored quickly as 25 seconds later O’Brien put the puck in the back of the net to make it 2-2. Dente and Ettenhoffer

each got helpers on the score.

“That’s the key to staying in the game,” said Winchester coach Craig Seabury about rallying in their first game of the season.

“We scored right away and didn’t give them the momentum for very long. I thought we responded well after being down in the game twice.”

The two teams will face off again on Monday at O’Brien Rink in Woburn at 2:30 p.m.
